tors when the new highways, now
under construction, are finished.
It Is because of this expected in.
flux that the forest service Is now
working feverishly to enlarge and
Improve the picnic and camping
areas at the lake, Mr. Harpham re
lated. Because of the long winter
season when deep snow Isolates the
lake area. Improvement work must
be crowded Into three or four sum
mer months and carried on at the
time of year that the lake Is being
used as a recreation center. Present
construction . work U likely to cause
some annoyance and Inconvenience
to visitors, the supervisor conceded,
and he aaked the public's Indul
gence. When the Improvement pro
gram Is completed, the public will
be more than amply repaid for
whatever Inconvenience Is experienc
ed now. he added.
A three-mile section of the Caa
cade Lake highway la now under
construction. This stretch extends
from the south end of Diamond
lake to a point a abort distance
north of the lake resort. Presumably,
Mr. Harpham said, construction will
oontlnue until the new road con-
necte with the Willamette Highway
at crescent lake.
In addition a forest service road
Is being constructed up the North
Umpqua river and there remain only
about 10 miles to complete the road
which will be a feeder from the
Pacific highway at Roseburg.
"It can be seen, therefore, that
Diamond lake will soon be accessible
by a network of roads," the super
visor pointed out. "Undoubtedly all
these roads and hlghwaya will bring
campers and picnickers to the lake
In greater numbers than ever be
fore." The area at the south end of the
lake la to be developed for picnic
use only, Mr. Harpham related. It
la already a popular picnic center
but It Is to be expanded and 1m
proved with permanent facilities. In
eluding tables, stoves, running water
and sanitary equipment, he explain
ed. Through the picnic area will run
new forest road which will be
mad aa dust-proof as practicable,
dust being the only annoyance In
the picnic grounds now, Mr. Harp
ham aald. The present picnic ground
road la being sprinkled periodically
to allay the dust annoyance, he
added.
Extensive Improvements are being
carried out In the camping areas,
the supervisor pointed out. There,
too, permanent facilities are being
Installed. Also planned, he stated,
la the construction of a reservoir
and pipe line system from Spruce
creek to accommodate all camps In
the locality. This, he explained, will
bring running water within reach
of any camp spot In the whole
campground area. Installation of
flush-type toilets la also contem
plated. A novel Improvement being car
ried out In the camp area la a sys
tem of sunken roads. These, below
the ground level, are being lined
with logs one foot or more in diam
eter. The roads are to be coated
with crushed rock or some other
material to mtnlmlBe dust, Mr.
Harpham said. Spurs lead off from
the roads Into each camping alte,
room being provided for the parking
of a car and trailer.
It waa found necessary to confine
motor traffic to roads In the camp
ing grounds so aa to avoid the cre
ation of "dust bowls" by cars run
ning over the entire surface areas.
Mr. Harpham aald. The sunken
roads were conceived aa a means of
avoiding acenlc obstructions which
would result from fences along
roads built on the surface, be added.
"From expression of appreciation
that the forest service, ha received
from thousand of vleltor, we are
fully convinced that the people pre'
fer Improved camp and picnic
grounds to the virgin area or prev
ious yeare," Mr. Harpham aald. "We
are doing our utmost to provide
th publlo with a real recreational
paradise at Diamond lake."

night. He was en route to Diamond
lake where he waa to spend a few
days In making a general Inspection
of the improvements now under

Funeral services for Mrs. 8. J. Blake
ly, who was fatally Injured In an au
tomobile crash near Selma. Aug 7,
were held In the community hall at
Rogue River Thursday afternoon.
The hall was filled with scores of
sorrowing friends and relatives who
came to pay last respect to one who
waa beloved by all.
Rita Belle Thompson was born In
Nebraska October, 888 and on her
18th birthday was united In marriage
to Sandy J. Blakely. To the union
were born fifteen children, ten daugh
ters and five sons. All are living and
were present for the funeral. They
are:
Mrs. Ruth LeMolne of Klamath
Falls; Mrs. Sarah Carl of Everett,
Wn Mrs. Lenora Winters of Rogue
River; Mrs. Margaret Hofferstlne of
Bandon; and Don, Milo, Clarence,
Glenn, Catherine, Edna, Oleo, Del-
mar, Norma, Virginia and Lola, all
single. Mrs. Blakely Is alao survived
by her husband, her mother, Mrs.
Nelson Rowley, several brothera and
sisters and five grandchildren.
Services were conducted by th
Rev. Mr. Call, assisted by the Rev.
Van Duker. Interment was In th
Rogue River cemetery.
Service for Ooldle Hargltt, 10 who
also met death In the accident, wer
held In the Presbyterian church Fri
day morning at 10 o'clock. The Rev.
Van Duker officiated.
The child was born at Globe, Ore,
In 1937, moving to Rogue River with
her parent In July from Washington. '
