Some congressmen have grown a
little sensitive about adjournment.
There has been a lot of talk about
the "long vacations" of members of
congress, as compared with those
usually enjoyed by mere mortals.
In response to these digs, there
have been threats to read Into the
record the vacation schedules of some
of the big Industrial concerns.
Three large corporations, supposed
to be "typical," allow two weeks va
cation to employes who have been
In their service five years. Other6
vary from the E. I. DuPont de Ne
mours company's policy of granting
two weeks after a years employment
to Welrton Steel, at the other end
of the rainbow which grants two
days for those who have been em
ployed a year six days for those with
five to ten years' service and ten
days for those who have stuck more
than 15 years.
Irate farmers took a long look at
an elaborat treasury document.
printed expressly for the president
and congress, and grew hotter under
the collar. It Is a 379-page book,
minutely indexed, and It shown just
where every dollar of relief expendi
ture goes. This tale-telling tome Is
the work of the highly efficient dl
vision of accounts and deposits of
the treasury.
What irked the farmers and their
friends was the figure of fl,734.-
814.048. the total allocation of relief
expenditures to date In three in
dustrial states, New York. Pennsyl
vania and Massachusetts, making up
about 25 percent of the grand total
for all states, which amounts to
over six billions.
New York state alone received, dur
ing the last two years. $900,000,000
out of which WPA In New York City
spent over $400,000,000 under the
sponsorship of various agencies of
the city, state and federal govern
ments.
The treasury document came out
about the time the papers carried
side by side two steps taken by the
house appropriations committee. One
turned down a 20,000.000 expendi
ture to atd tenant farmers (already
authorized by congress), and the
other votd over $10,000,000 for the
Grand Central post, office in New
York (for which the federal govern
ment was already obligated) and a
$3,000,000 contribution to the New
York world's fair.
