WASHINGTON, r. O. fSpl) To
matoea certainly have come Int.
their own.
The vegetable, once regarded i.
poisonous, today la a favorite o,
tables of rich and poor alike, am
respected by scientists aa a hlghl:
nutrltloua rood.
Tola year'a prospects are or a to
tal crop a tittle larger than lau
year'a, according to the bureaus lat
est, report. From Utah, Colorado,
Waahlngon, Oregon, Michigan, WIs
conaln, Arkansas, Missouri, New Jer
aey, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Ten
nessee and New York come laconic
wires saying "conditions good." But I
from Ohio the significant report Is i
"excessive rains,' and from Indiana
and Virginia "excellent in some sec i
tlons, poor In others."
Nevertheless no one has the temer
ity to forecast what the price of
these same tomatoes will be when
they come to market.
Prices Fluctuate
Tomato prices are as erratic as
the proverbial March winds, accord- '
tng to W. A. Sherman, bureau 01
agricultural economics. And for good
reason. Fey other vegetables are so
at tbe morcy of the elements. Comes 1
a row of hot, dry days and tomatoes
develop bad sun scalds, with an ac- '
companylng drop In quality and :
price. Bring on some heavy rains and ;
the result may be big craoka In the j
tomatoes and prices plummeting j
downward.
Bargain hunting shoppers would
do well to consider more than price
In their tomato buying. For Instance. '
one market may be advertising Its
tomatoes 35 cents a peck cheaper 1
than another marketing ccntar a
block away. But the spread In price
may be fully Justified. There may '
be more waste in the cheaper basket,
the finish on the tomatoea may be
Inferior, the flavor poor. Maybe they
are cracked and have to be used at
once to prevent spoilage. Of course,
the poorer quality basket may be
quite aa usable aa the more expensive
one. It all depends upon what dis
position the buyer wants to make
of the tomatoes, la she going to can
them aa tomato Juice? Then the re
quired trimming may not be great
enough to oanoel the price differ
ence and the oheaper basket may
actually be the saving it appears.
Tomatoea march hand In hand
With the citrus frulta through every
diet plan worked out by nutrition
ists for families of every Income
i
level. These two foods are the good
old vitamin O stand-bys the bul
wark of a good diet, aa far as this
vitamin la concerned.
flare Vitamin A Too
But don't get the Idea from this
that tomatoes and the iltrua fruits
r equally valuable vitamin C
sources, the nutritionist will warn.
They are not ordinarily oqual. wolght
for weight. Juice from red ripe to
matoes, on the average, haa about
half aa much of this valuable nut
rient as doea most fresh orange or
grapefruit Juice. But even so, tomato
Juice may prove the cheapor drink,
for prices often run less than half
that of the cltrua fruit Juices, es
pecially when tomatoes are In season
locally.- Then, too, tomatoes hsve a
good supply of vitamin A, which la
lacking In the cltrua frulta.
Just supposing a person were do
pending almost entirely on tomatoes
or tomato Juice tor his day's quota
of vitamin C, then how much
should he get a day?
Nutritionist hesitate to answer
that one specifically. Tomatoea make
one of the most valuable of our
sources of vitamin C. these scient
ists will say cautiously, but
Tomatoes (as well as citrus fruits)
differ In vitamin C value depending
on variety, on whether they are
cooked or raw and If cooked how,
whether they have been held open
to the air for some time after being
allced or after tlie can la opened.
To be specific: some tomato var
ieties develop more than three times
aa much vitamin C aa do others.
And variations within a given var
iety are also great. Oreen tomatoea
have almost at much of this nutrient
aa do ripe onea. And those picked
green and ripened off the vine by
the commercial ethyelene treatment
develop practically aa much as do
vlne-rlpened ones. Ripe tomatoes
stored as long as 30 days lose prac
tically no vitamin c so long aa they
are firm and free from decay.
One a Day Adequate
In spite of all these variables. It
can be said that a medium sited
freeh tomato. If It haa an average
amount of vitamin O, ahould supply
a person with hia dey'a need of this
vitamin. Thafa counting as medium
a alee of which It would take about
tour tomatoea to make a pound.
Tnerc'a aomc vllanun C loss In
canning tomatoes whole or as Juice,
but not enough to worry about. To
mato Juice made from ripe whole
fruit contains practically aa much
vitamin O aa the tomatoea from
which It la made. And home-made
tomato Juice la quite as valuable as
the commercial product.
Once fanned, tomatoea and tomato
Juice ahow no appreciable vitamin
C loaa during atorage, even when
storage la at room temperature for
several months. And reheating upon
opening doesn't much affect the
nutritive value either.
Therefore when prlrea of the fresh
fruit warrant It. canning tomato
brings very satisfactory results. A -.id
diatetloally It Is advisable to put
moat of the tomato supply "atratght"
or In Juice form, rather thro a
pickles or con sens. The let Mr foods
are tt tractive and desirable a cam-
sorles to a meal, hut their nitrltlve I

SEATTLE, wash. (AP) when tbe
world's biggest airplanes start aron
tng across the Atlantic next year,
they will be powered with motors
gulping enough gasoline In a single
crossing to su; ply the average mo
torist for five years.
Only with the aid of such steal
.titans will airplanes of even tba
most advanced design make good the
conquest of the sea In the modern
mauner.
Rated at 1,500 horsepower each,
four of these great motors will be
fitted Into the leading edge of the
alrplaae wing. Collectively, they wilt
burn 190 to 300 gallons of gasoline
sn hour. - !
Conceived Before War
The engines for the fcwo-doeVeeJ
Boeing flying boat, being built hers,
were first conceived In the era of the
Titanic, the steamship that could
not sink but did. europesn engln
eers actually built grsndfathers of
today's two-row radial.
It was not until after the World
war, however, that the two-row
radial was manufactured commer
daily. Today, the culmination of a
quarter century of engineering la a
power plant ahaped like a atar fish
and developing one horse-power for
each one and one quarter pounds of
weight.
Unlike automobile englnea which
are "In line" or v-ahaped, the red
lal engine for aircraft, haa cylinders
which spread out from the crankceae
like the spokes of a wheel. Piston
rods are attached to a sleeve sheath
ing a elngle main bearing. Progres
siva explosions push the bearing
around the curls It describes In put
ting the airplane propellor In mo
tion. Ahead of Times
To create a twin-row radial engine,
aeronautical engineers, In effect,
welded two motors together, one be
hind the other. .
Xt wss not thst simple, of course,
and when they tried It out several
years ago, they discovered the larger
of their twin-row radlals were too
many Jumps shead of the airplane.
Alrplanea did not need that much
power then.
Today motor factories are produc
ing radial englnea of tremendous
power for commercial aircraft, and
the armed services are doing exper
imental work on a.OOO-horsepower
motors.
Vibration Reduced -Today's
twin-row power plsnt con
sists of 14 cylinders, 7 In each row.
For beat performance, propellers are
geared down to travel only M to 71
percent aa faat as the motors.
With these new motors, tba cabin
vibration fait by the passengers on
a transport plana la reduced meas
urably, and because the motors run
mors smoothly they have longer Uvea.
K knotty problem In building big
transport planaa is "drag," the re
duction In speed caused by promot
ing surfaces. In engineering the
twin-row. manufacturers were sbts
to reduce the frontal ares of ths
motor am therefore the drag, from
30 to 36 parcent.
