"Saratoga." the, miMt trailed about
film of the year, finally arrives today
at the New Craterian theatre for a
limited engagement of three days
only. Clark Gable and the late Jean
Harlow are co-starred. According to
advance notices from critics every
where. "Saratoga" gives the blonde
star her greatest role to date. Not
$oo much can be said of the meteoric
rise of Harlow and In tills, film she
was destined to rise even higher. The
final showing of this great box office
hit is credited to the millions of fana
who wrote In to the producers de
manding the completion and show,
lng of their favorite actress' last pic.

Miss Harlow plays the spoiled
daughter of a wealthy horse-owner.
and Gable, her .favorite co-star- Is
seen as a bookmaker, whom, she first
bates, then learns to love. They bat
tle, argue and fight their way
through to love in episodes sometimes
dramatic, and sometimes hilariously
funny. A complete horse farm stock
ed with animals ranging from veteran
race horses to colts was constructed
so that Llolen Barrymore might turn
horse-breeder. A dramatis story of
racing, "Saratoga" Is complete with
racing thrills that require months of
technical . work. Careening horses
were followed by cameras at all the
big tracks In the United States, es
pecially Saratoga. A special camera
car, capable of 100 miles an hour
while carrying eight cameras on spe
cial mounts, was designed for the
filming of race track and such thrills,
the cameras being kept ahead of the
horses.
Story is by Ontta Loos and Robert
Topklns, authors of "San Francisco," a
former Gable Hit. The notable cast
surrounding Miss Harlow and Gable
Includes Lionel Barrymore as Grand
pa Clayton. Prank Morgan. Walter
Fldgeon, Una. Merkel, Cliff Edwards,
Frankle Darro and Henry Stone.
. The unusual plot deals with a
wealthy girl, financial troubles, plots
to victimize a man at horse race bet
ting, and a final romance between
the girl and bookmaker who started
at bitter enemies. Settings range from
sv.ank ho',els and penthouses In New
York and London to ' Jockeys' quar
ters and stables. . ,.
One of the most lavish sets In the
picture Is the complete Barrymore
stock farm, stocked with "actual fa
mous thoroughbreds. Another Is the
grandstand at Saratoga, reproduced at
the studio for crowd action.

Dick Powell as a leatherneck who
can sing, Is the star In "The Singing
Marine," which comes to the New
Craterian theatre Thursday for a
three day run. His new leading lady Is
Doris Weston who got her break on
Major Bowes' radio program. Other
members of the all-star cast are Lee
Dixon, Hugh Herbert, Jane Darwell,
Allen Jenkins. Berton Churchill, Ed
die Acuff, George (Doc) Rockwell
and Gulnn (Big Boy) Williams. Twenty-five
other names ar. listed as well
as huge choruses of dancing sweeties.
Song hits listed by Warren and Du-bin-
are "You Can't Run Away From
Love," "I Know Now," "The Song of
the Marines, Cause My Baby Says
It's So." "The Lady Who Couldn't Be
Kissed" and "Night Over Shanghai."

A dynamic dramatization of a fear
less prosecutor's one-man campaign
against playboys turned killers when
driving drunkenly, "The Devil la
Driving," will open a three-day run
today at the Rialto theatre, with
Richard Dlx In the starring lole.
Joan Perry, lovely leading lady, heads
the Imposing supporting cast wnicn

son, Ellsha Cook Jr.,' Henry Kolker,
Ann Rutherford and John Wray.
"The Devil Is Driving" relates the
career of a brilliant young attorney,
played by Dlx, who ascends to the
district attorney's office on the ac
quittal he obtains for a wealthy
young wastrel charged with first
degree manslaughter as a result of
drunken driving. To break the case
Dlx resorts to perjury among all con
cerned, winning thereby the contempt
of his sweetheart, a newspaper
reporter played by Miss Perry.
Entrenched In the D. A.'s office,
however, Dlx repents and launches a
relentless campaign against traffic
violators. His sincerity, doubted at
first. Is again questioned when he
Is faced with prosecuting the very
same boy he once acquitted, for kill
ing a girl In another motor accident.
Using the weapons Dlx conceived
perjury and bribery against him,
the boy and his wealthy father again
almost succeed In stifling Justice.
But in a sensational, surprise climax
Dlx unlooses a bombshell in the
court which has been hailed aa one
of the most dramatic scenes In re
cent films.
The hilarious Jones Family, Amer
ica's favorite scrten and radio family,
share double bill honors In "Big Bus
iness." The plot of the film fea
tures the Jones family and their
dreams of sudden wealth; and their
reaction to acquiring It.

NORT BEND. Aug. 7. (AP) Offi
cers sought a youth tonight believed
to be Arthur Dltter. 18, transient,
after- he had run down and fatally
Injured John D. Phillips, 79, on
downtown street at noon today.
In a borrowed car, officers said the
youth drove some distance after the
accident and fled from the automo
bile with a companion.
The victim Is survived by his
widow; two sons, Jess and Roy of
North Bend, and daughters, Mrs,
Grace Hayse of Rose burg and Mrs.
Raleigh Wood of Longvlew. Wash.

Kent Taylor and Nan Gray come to
the Rialto theatre for Wednesday and
Thursday In the most novel of screen
plays, "Love In a Bungalow," a gay
story of the adventures of a hostess
of a model bungalow. Miss Grey plays
the hostess and Taylor portrays the
role of a young super-salesman who
steal the use of one of her bedrooms
for a night, bringing about the most
unusual plot for a fast and glorious
romance.
"Rhythm In the Clouds," starring
Patricia Sills and Warren Hull, is
scheduled as the added attraction.

SENATE PROPOSES
NSURANCE BILL
The committee also stipulated con
tracts with growers should be for one
year periods during the first three

journment. Insurance coverage would be lim
ited to 75 per cent of the normal
crop. Premium rates would range
from less than one per cent to as
high aa.38 per cent of the average
yield, depending on tha area. The
highest rates would prevail In the
southwestern "dust bowl."

Right when Lupe Velee, Bruce
Cabot, the RUb brothers and other
film celebrities were expecting some
thing to eat In the Brown Derby
cafe last night, 60 employes wslked
out.
SILVER LAKE. Aug. 7. VP) Plr
destroyed another landmark here last
nlht, burning the restaurant of Mrs.
Myrtlce lasater.
Albert Waterbouie, brother of Mlsa
Llllice Waterhouse. who was operat
ing the cafe In the absence of th
owner. 111 in a Portland hospital, dis
covered the fire burning an outside
wall about midnight. He said be be
lieved the flames were of Incendiary
origin.
Besides the cafe, the fire destroyed
some service station equipment but
the Lasater residence and a group of
automobile cabins were saved.
First a saloon, the restaurant was
converted Into a hospital after the
great fire of Christmas eve, 1894, when,
43 persons perished In a hall.
The blare was the second serious
one here In four months, flames de
stroying the Chrtsman hotel last
May.
