- This . action followed closely an
official Japanese Intimation that the
north China cone of hostilities
might extend southward to the Tel

The Hankow consular district In
dudes a small part of Honan pro

China summer resort In Honan about
100 miles north of Hankow, were
about 800 Americans, missionaries

marines to reinforce those already
ashore and ordered the evacuation.

V nocked down leaders tractions to 3
points. There were a few wider set
backs. Pivotal steels, rails, utilities, farm
implements and rubbers were among
the principal sufferers. At the same
time offerings were far from volum

ties managed to buck the trend. Ris

abroad stimulated the former and
actual and prospective company pro

Colin Merrill to watch the bridge at
Cascade Locks. Descriptions of the
robbery were broadcast from the i
Portland police and the Oregon state
police radio stations.
Sheriff Leland Morrow of Clark
county reported from Vancouver that
his office was on the alert for a yel
low coupe as well as the sedan.
The robber met us at the door
as Qregorlus and I came In at 8:30
a. m- said Beck. "He was very nerv
ous and 1 thought he either had been
hopped up or had been drinking.
"As we opened thu door, be stuck
a gun in my stomach and told us
to come In and He down on the
floor. The Janitor was bound up on
the floor In the back room. The rob
ber had come in the bank at 7:30
a. m.. with the Janitor. Just how he
got In, I don't know because when
we untied the Janitor he beat It. He
was scared to death.
The robber had light ropes already
cut and he tied our hands and feet.
As we lay there, he asked me when
the vault would open. I tried to stall
him and finally told him It would
open at 9:05 a. m. He told us If we
did anything he didn't like he would
blow us all over the floor.' I told
him we were ready to follow his In
structions.
Put Money In Pocket
When the vault opened he uncled
me and made me go In and get the
money. He was careful to make me
handle everything, touching nothing
except the currency when I banded i
It to him. He didn't have a sack but '
stuffed the money in his pockets.
As he left, he warned us again
that he would kill us If we spread
an alarm and then locked me In the
vault. He still had some money In :
his hands when he walked out the
front door. People across the street i
saw him walk about a block. They !
didn't pay much attention, apparent-'
ly thinking he was a customer. About r
a block away he started to run and
apparently got In an automobile and
headed west.
"While we were on the floor he
told us he was a 'desperate man' and
waa robbing the bank because he
needed the money.
"We haven't completed a check yet
but he got around $20,000, probably
a little less than that."
