HAND OF SLAYER
IS KEY TO GRIM
UNDER NEW IESI
MILWAUKEE (UP) Milwaukee
gunmen are being trapped In ft
chemist's laboratory.
White-coated city chemist work
ing quietly among their test tubei,
betters and flaska have become the
gun-carrying criminal's worst enem
ies.
Under the leadecshlp of Russell W.
Cunllffe, director of the bureau of
laboratories the chemlsta have devel
oped a test which they believe Is
virtually error-proof In connecting
- gun with the person who fired It.
The chemical experts have Im
proved the method by linking a gun
man and his gun through paraffin
tests by recording the exact distribu
tion of powder marks left by a gun
. on the shooter's hands.
When police detain a suspect In a
shooting case they take him Immedi
ately to the detective bureau for a
paraffin mold of his hand. The mold
then Is turned over to Cunllffe who
tests It for traces of powder.
"Powder contains a nitrate," Cun-
llffe explained, "When a gun Is fired
. microscopic particles bore Into the
skin of the hand holding the weap
on." ,
- Traces of powder are picked up by
the iuold, the chemist said. When
a nitrate testing solution Is applied
to the mold blue spots appear It the
ritrate Is present.
While tee chemist applies the nl
, trate tester to the mold, others note
. and record the number, size and dls
, trlbutlon of the blue particles..
On a diagram of the hand the
teeters record where each particle of
powder is found.
, "Then by tracing the distribution
of the powder marks made In con
trolled shooting It Is possible to con
nect a gun with the powder marks
found on the hand," Cunllffe aald.
. ."In one case, a husband was shot
while alone with his wife. The quesv
tluon was whether he had shot him
self or whether she had killed him.
A paraffin test revealed SO particles
of powder on the dead mans hand.
X fired the gun and B8 particles of
powder were distributed on my hand
In the same manner as the dead
man's," Cunllffe said, explaining that
this convinced him that the man
had fired the gun.
. Cunllffe said the test has been
used In 03 cases here rrince It was
discovered In his laboratory In 1033.
At present bis assistants are work
ing on a process that would enable
them to produce a permanent pic
ture of the mold. As now used the
mold becomes Invaluable t after a
single test.

There'i a real delight in lifting these
