Twelfth Night." a rollicking com
edy, was presented a tbe third pro
duction in the Shakespearean fes
tival repertoire before an enthusias
tic audience in Ashland's outdoor
theatre last night.
"Romeo and Juliet,' which opened
Tuesday evening, will play for the
last time tonight and those who
missed the first performance will
want to see this popular Shakespear
ean tragedy, smoothly enacted this
year by a cast headed by Kitty Ingle
aa Juliet and T. Arnold Baughn aa
Romeo. Curtain will rise at 8:30
o'clock, and both reserved and gen
eral admission seats are still avail
able. Confirmed Shakespeare enthusiasts
who have witnessed "Twelfth Night"
In previous festival years, agreed that
last night's performance far surpass
ed the earlier efforts. The actors were
keyed to a nice pitch and drew hearty
rounds of laughter from the audience
as the play swept through one amus
ing situation after another. j
Honors were evenly divided be
tween the leading players. Angus L.
Bow me r, festival director, appeared
In one of his favorite roles as Sir
Toby Belch, a lovably inebriate. John
Barker as Sir Andrew Aguecheek,
drinking companion to Sir Toby, held
up his end of the acting partnership
without difficulty.
Dorothy Prultt, as the rich Coun
tess Olivia, turned in a polshed per
formance, as did Doreen Leverette,
who played the charming Olivia.
Kitty Ingle, who plays Juliet in "Ro
meo and Juliet," departed from that
gentle characterization to turn In a
neat performance as Maria, the mls
chevious lady in .waiting to the coun
tess. George F. Smith appeared as Mal
volla, the steward In love with him
self, and his letter scene was one of
the high lights of the play.
Bob Stedmon, as Foste the Clown,
turned in a sparkling performance,
his role giving him an opportunity
to sing several numbers. William
Cottrell, the festival's assistant direc
tor, who directed "Twelfth Night"
this year, handled the light role of
Fabian, a clownish servant.
T. Arnold Baughn, as Orslno, Jim
Parsons as , Sebastian, Morgan Cook
s Antonio and Harold Reedy as Val
entine, cnrrled their parts In their
Norman Hamilton In the role of
Curio, Lyle Helta as the priest and
Arden Hull as an officer.
Frank Smith and Ruth Aston were
attendants ond Audrey Lofland and
Kathleen Nourse were curtain boys.
Attendance last night came close
to that of opening night, and re
ceipts are already nearly double that
of last year. Tickets are on sale at
the chamber of commerce in Ash
land, chamber of commerce in Med
