SUPPLY OF WATER TRADE NEARS END

IN CENTRAL POINT
Attention wu called last week ' to
the aerlouaneaa of the altuation tn
regard to city water la Central Point
at the present time. This -week I
have done a bit of private Investi
gating and find the condition to be
aa follows:.
Pint: The water In the city well
1 lower at the present time . than
It ever has been and the supply
seems to be falling gradually.
Second : - In order to provide any
sort of fire protection It Is necessary
to partly close the gates at the city
well during the heat of the day In
order to allow the well to till up so
the big tank can be kept full.
Third : For the past several years
the old mains throughout the city
have given a great deal of trouble
en account of leakage. Mr. Cum
tntngs, city water superintendent,
estimates he bas at present about
92000 worth of paten clamps scat
tered over the entire city.
Fourth: There is no way of telling
Just bow much water Is seeping away
on account of leaky mains, but It
Ja thought that the amount ts large
enough, to make a very appreciable
difference tn the amount of water
required to keep the tank full, thus
causing a heavy drain on tbe well.
Fifth: It Is an established fact
that the population of Central Point
has grown heavily In the past year.
Every house In town Is occupied at
this time. Thus there Is a much
heavier demand for water for house
hold and sanitary purposes than for
several years.
Sixth: The campaign put on for
a more beautiful ctty has caused
more flowers, shrubs and lawns to
be planted than ever before. While
the larger users of water have wells
of their own and thus do not use
so much city water, yet the Increase
In population has added thousands
of gallons dally to the use of city
water. - - ; .
Bearing the above facte In mind,
tt appears that if we hope to have
our city grow any more In popula
tion: If we horj to attract more
and larger bur'aese concerns to lo
cate, here; ' we want to see-more
of our vacant lots sold to . people
who will build homes thereon, we
must get busy and decide Just what
we are going to do about water.
Shalt we give up any idea of a
bigger and better city? Shall we say
to those who come almost dally
seeking homes here that we welcome
their coming but they must take
their chances of having to face a
water shortage each summer?
Or shall we get busy and look Into
the cost of a more adequate water
supply? And having done so. bravely
shoulder the burden, hoping that
future years will prove the wisdom
of our action.
Think it over, folks. Don't blame
the "water man"' If your water falls.
He is doing all that Is humanly pos
sible to keep us going and to pro
vide what fire protection he can.
And don't waste what little water

of the end of summer slackness,
