Autumn Forecast
Awaits Decision
Paris Designers
NEW YORK (AP) Hemllnea may
make headlines when the new fall
clothes, now being rushed to com
pletion, make their debut at the
end of July.
Most fashion observers think the
scene Is set for short skirts. This
does not mean the knee-length ver
sion thst bloomed In the "turbulent
twenties." Instead, the consensus
leans to hemlines from 13 to IS
Inches from the ground, though the
final decision rests with Paris de
signers. The point that has the fsshlon
world thinking is the length of
evening skirts. Many style scouts
think that the shorter evening skirts
Psrls lsunched last season (with un
even hemlines or straight hems
varying from ankle length to ten
Inches from the ground) will be
seen In greater number thla fall
It la a point to keep In mind.
Waistlines have been a headache
up to date. There are strong hints
that French and American designers
are giving much thought to a low
ered line. Already dresses are being
seen with molded shirred bodices
having seams not for from the hip
bones and othera with vee seams,
one pointing up and the other down,
thus giving the effect of a longer
waistline without definitely mark
ing It.
However, some Parla designers are
flirting with the Dlrectolre mode
(which means a high walsted line)
snd a number of New York frocks
appear with normal waists, while
the fashion world awaits the decree
of Its dictators.
