Oovernor Martin, reported to be
planning to keep ble re-election am

effect of the governors chair on Its
occupsnt when he said:
'Julius Meier lost his heslth and
resources while serving ss governor.
It killed him."
Health Still Good
But Oovernor Martin, despite a
evict acnsduie, still Is In good health
after three years In office. He Is 73
years old.
The filings of J. W. Morton, Hood
Rlvsr, for the Republican guberna
torial nomination, and of Nlcklas J.
Zylstra, Polk county farmer, for the
Democratic nomination for represen
tative in congress, are the only ones
received by the secretary of state. The
primary election I 10 months away.
Tourists from every state, Alaska,
Hawaii, Canal Zone, Philippines and
the District of Columbia, as well as
from several foreign countries, con
tributed to the wealth of the state
during the first six months of this
ysar.
California Leads
There were 33,030 out-of-state cars
registered, while that figure will be
trebled during the summer months.
California, led with 38,068, Wash
ington being second with 9,834 and
Idaho next with 1917.
Twenty-two cars were registered
from Alaska, and eight each from the
Philippines and Mexico.

Nineteen of the 20 majors and 73 of
the 87 captains had war experience
Since most of the lieutenants are
younger men. not so many have had
actual battle experience. Twenty-
four of the 81 first lieutenants and 13
of the 81 second lieutenants fought In
the World war.

ASHLAND.. July 1. (8pl.) Many
residents from Medford and other
southern Oregon cities are planning
to attend the Greater Ashland celebra
tion which will start here at a ban
quet at the Lithia hotel tonight at
8:30 o'clock and continue through
Saturday evening.
Elaborate plans have been made by
a large group of committees to pro
vide a varied program for the two
days, with plenty of free entertain-
ment.
Orand opening of the modernized
Lithia hotel will occur at 8 o'clock to
night following the banquet, and all
who attend the opening will be given
free tickets to a midnight theater
party or to a midnight swimming
party at the Twin plunges. Pree danc
ing will be provided at the hotel dur
ing the evening.
Free Welner Boast
A free wiener roast will attract
large crowd to lower Lithia perk Sat
urday noon, and the cornerstone lsy
lng for the New Lithia theater will
bring the visitors back to the business
section at 1:30 o clock.
At 3 o'clock, nearly 100 organiza
tion and buslnese firms, In addition
to hundreds of children and aoorea of
horsemen, will stage a gigantic par
ade through the business district, and
100 In prizes have been offered to
the best entries.
Free dancing will also be available
at the hotel Saturday evening, and a
colorful fireworks display from the
roof of the nine-story structure will
flash against the night sky at 9
o'clock. Archie Legg's 13-plece or
chestra from Yreka has been engaged
by the Llthlans, Ashland booster club.

To Crown Queen
Miss Gertie Wenner, winner of the
Fourth of July bathing beauty con.

celebration at the banquet tonight.
Dr. Arthur S. Taylor, professor at

new theater site tomorrow afternoon
as a personal representative of Mayor
T. S. Wiley, who was unable to par
ticipate. Postmaster John H. Fuller,
general chairman of the celebration,
and Senator George w. Dunn will also
play parte at the cornerstone cere
mony.
The city band will be active during
the fiesta, with performsnces sched
uled for Main street at 11 o'olock to
morrow morning, at the wiener roast,
cornerstone ceremony and parade. '

An Initiative petition to be circu
lated by the Oregon Stream Purifi
cation league will seek prevention
and control of water defilement In
Oregon, proposing a measure slmller
to that vstoed by Governor Martin
after the last legislative session.
The sctlon was decided upon here
Thursday at a meeting of the steer
ing committee of the league.
Petitions will be circulated within
the next ten days. Senator Byron O.
Carney, chairmen of the committee,
said.

PORTLAND, Ore., July 18. (AP)
Reports from 116 mills showed lsst
week's new business of 60,842,000
board feet of lumber was 17 per cent
below the previous week's mark, the
Western Pine association said today.
Production totaled 78,950,000 feet,
about seven million feet under a
week ago, and shipments reached
58,717,000 feet or at out thirteen mil
lion feet under last week. Orders
and production exceeded totals for
the corresponding week In 1936 but
shipments showed a slight decline.
To date, orders were reported 14
per cent above last year.

A petition filed In federal court by
Howard P. Doyle, operator of the
Oregon-California stag lines, asked
annulment of an Interstate commerce
commission ruling denying him a
certificate of operation.
The petition said Doyle operated a
common carrier between Portland
and San Francisco prior to July 1,
1039, wnen the commissions new
regulations became effective, and
contends he should be granted a prior
right.
