Claudette Colbert In Sparkling Comedy On Craterian's Bill Today

funs, particularly Claudette Colbert
fans, the news of her new picture, "I
Met Him In Paris." starting a three
day engagement today at the New
Craterlan theater, is tiit&ier news of
the best. And from all reports, the
film takes Its place amon? Miss Col
bert's most entertaining productions,
full of the snappy, "qulck-on-the-trlgger"
dialogue at which she ex
cels. Robert Young and Melvyn Doug
las, both of whom have appeared
In previous Colbert pictures, are cast
in the roles of the two writers who
meet Claudette, on vacation in Paris,
and simultaneously fall In lave with
her.
An up-to-the-mlnut girl with ft
thirst for fun, the star Is shown arriv
ing In Paris and Immediately plung
ing into double-barreled romance with
the two gay, ijlddy gents. The ro
mantic chase carries the threesome
to the Swiss Alps, and then back to
Paris, with the girl still unable to
make up her mind which of her two
determined suitors she prefers.
The widely -publicised Sun Valley
resort In .Idaho was the locale used
for the Alps sequences. The company
had a vacation and location trip at
the same time. A whole Swiss village
was built especially for the picture.
And such a hit was the place with
the owners that Immediately follow
ing the filming, work started on
building an exact duplicate for actual
use at the resort, except on ft much
larger scale.
Winter sports toboganning, ice
skating, skiing all have their part
In the fun, and with the cool snow
scenes lending their atmosphere to
the picture, It makes It an Ideal pic
ture for warm weather.

Business in spot wool on the Boston
market during the past week was
mostly quiet. Persistence of the -wool
handlers' strike prevented mills from
covering immediate needs.

(who played Jeeter Lester in the
coast engagements of "Tobacco
Road") and many other famous
characters are on hand as the long
bearded boys whose Idea of heaven
is a squirrel rifle, nothing to shoot
at, and plenty of soft gra for
reclining purposes.

WASHINGTON, July 10. (AP
Cool brecees of the Chesapeake bay
lured President Roosevelt away from
Washington's extreme heat today for
a week-end "working cruise" -aboard
the presidential yacht Potomac.
Arranging a Journey which would
take him down the bay and up the
Potomac on the return trip, the
chief executive left the White House
shortly before noon by motor for
Annapolis to board the Potomac
with a small official party.
His guests included James M.
Landls; chairman of the securities
commission, and Mrs. Landls and
Representative Rayburn - (D., Tex.),
the democratic leader.
The president planned to return
to Washington tomorrow evening.

GOVERNOR FILES
SALEM. July 10. (AP) J. W.
Morton of Hood River today filed
his declaration for governor with the
secretary of state. He Is a Republi
can. "I favor a 50 a month pension
for all needy persons 60 years of
age or over." his declaration read.
Morton also favors tax and debt
exemptions on home property, sound
money and a balanced budget. His
name will appear on the ballot at
the next Republican primary elec
tion. .
The declaration was accompanied
by a check for J100, the statutory
filing fee.

MADRID, July 10. (AP) Eighteen
Americans were listed today among
volunteers wounded while fighting
with Spanish government troops in
the current offensive against Insur
gents outside; Madrid in addition to
three Amaricans reported killed In ac
tion The wounded Americans were pa
tients in Madrid hospitals but will
be transferred to other institutions.
Members of the George Washington
battalion said the Americans killed
were Jean Bronsteln, David Walba
and Ray Peters. Their home addresses
were not given.

CHICAGO. July 10. (AP) Wheat
prices plunged three cents a bushel
today as the market reflected the
official forecast Indicating winter
wheat production prospects In gen
eral Improved the past month. En
larged buying developed on the
break, however, and ths market ral
lied, erasing about half of It loss
before tha close.
Some of the late buying was asso
ciated with a statement of i lead
ing crop authority that the govern
ment report apparently did not
make enough allowance for dsmrge
from rust in some northern and
eastern areas of the winter what
belt. Tlits observer said the , esti
mate of Nebraska production, for
example, was only slightly reduced
but the federal crop statistician In
that state has reported the lowest
yield he ever heard of In parts of
Burt and Washington counties.
War-Torn Spain Is
Locale Riaito Hit
The drama of war-torn Spain has
been' made the background for a
powerful motion picture plot in "The
Last Train From Madrid," a star
studded drama which opens a three
day run at the Riaito theater today.
With a capable cast of players, "The
Last Train From Madrid," la the story
of ten persons, most of them un
known to each other, whose Uvea are
suddenly thrown together and their
destinies worked out during twelve
feverlah hours In Madrid while the
city la under heavy bombardment.
The main theme Is built around
Dorothy Lamour, Gilbert Roland, and
Anthony Qulnn. Tha latter, Miss La
mour 's sweetheart, arranges for her
to escape from the besieged city on
the last tratn out. He also secures
pass for hte friend. Roland, only to
realise that the two are old sweet
hearts. Unable to leave the city him
self, he permits the two to depart for
Valencia, hoping that the girl will
choose between himself and Roland
later.
Aboard the same train ta Karen
Morley, an adventuress who love Ro
land. Despite the peril that surrounds
them all she continue to play her
game of playing one man against an
other. Wound up In the plot are the
destinies of Lew Ayres, an American
newspaperman.
"Girls Can Play," a thrilling new
action film baaed on female soft
ball players, la scheduled as the com
panion feature with "The Last Train
From Madrid." Jacqueline Wells and
Charles Qulgley co-star.
