The Crater throwing corps was In
creased to three yesterday when Al
vln Merrltt, with Medlord at the start
of the season, walked out of Hilt In
the Northern California league with
a fre agent status and signed with
the Craters. The' acquisition of the
former Medford Junior American Le
gion righthander has thrown the Cra
ter pitching situation today Into
doubt. Manager Balkovlck Intimated
that he would start Larry Pepper,
brilliant righthander, against Ash
land's Lefty Bob Hardy, but would
make no definite announcement. It
may be Pepper. Ray Erlckson or Mer
rltt who will start the game, he said.

For Ashland. Bob Hardy will def
initely open on the firing line, with
Lowell Brown being held in reserve
and working the Monday game. Har

face Larry Pepper and avenge the 4-3
defeat the Crater hurler handed him

Both clubs are reported In their
best condition of the year for the
two-game series which will feature
Ashland's big July 4 celebration. Each
won three and lost five games dur
ing the first-half Southern Oregon
league pennant race, and In two
games against each other, split even

pionship of Jackson county, In addi
tion to settling plenty of bitter feel
ing between the teams, and citizens
of the two cities.
. Manager Balkovlck said last night
that the Crater lineup would be prac
tically the same -that won two of its
last three league games, and that he
intends to use in the second-half
stretch battle which starts July 11.
Bob Smith will be on first base, Wal
ly Rlckert on second. Dick Lewis at
short, and Duke Hankinson on third.
Fans, along with Manager BalkovlcL
are hoping Hankinson snaps out of
his batting and fielding slump and
performs like he did in the Rose
bur;!; battle here June 6.

In the outfield, Lyle Russell, the
brilliant 18-year-old rookie who ap
pears to have tremendous possibil

Ashland fans, it has been reported,
have (250 cn hand to be wagered on
the outcome of the two games, and It
has been rumored in Medford that
local enthusiasts are considering cov
ering the money.
,The two teams will play tomorrow at
the same time, with Lowell Brown do
ing the Ashland hurling and one of
the three Medford pitchers going to
the mound for the locals. Largest
crowd In years Is expected today and
tomorrow. The chamber of commerce
band will provide music at both en

of the quick work of the fire depart
ment in suppressing the Medford Do
mestic Laundry fire was Issued last
night by Al Llttrell, officer of the
Jackson County Investment company,
owner of the adjacent Sparta build
ing and contiguous property on East
Main street.
Chief Roy Elliott and the regular
and volunteer members of the de
partment did a remarkable job of
controlling the fire that threatened
the whole business section adjacent
to the laundry, Mr. Llttrell said.
Considering the start the fire had,
many spectators expressed amass
ment at Its quick suppression. The
