TAKE HUGE TOLL
IN LIVES, MONEY
CHICAQO. July 9. (AP) Acci
dent cost the United Statei a grim
toll of 111,000 live and a staggering
bill of 3.700,000.000 in 1936. the Na
tional Safety council estimated to
day. The annual luminary of accident
facta said such fatalities of all types
exceeded by more than 10,000 the
193ft total 69.667.
It noted 10,750.000 persona were
Injured accidentally, one every three
seconds last year; 400,000 were per
manently disabled, and an accidental
death occurred every five minutes.
Approximately half of the increase
was ascribed to last summer's severe
heat wave.
Although traffic deaths were count
ed by the safety council at a new
high total of 87,800, fatal Injuries to
88,500 were blamed upon carelessness
In the home.
The safety council calculated that
two billion dollars In wages were lost
In 1636 by accident victims, that hos
pltal and medical expense amounted
to 8400.000,000, Insurance costs were
$200,000,000. excluding claims paid
- property damage in motor vehicle ac
cidents were 8830,000,000. and fire
losses $263,000,000.
Arizona had the highest fatal accl
dent rate 165.5 deaths per 100,000
Inhabitants; Rhode Island's rate was
lowest 59.8 per 100,000.
TRAVEL PEAK SET
AT CRATER LAKE
CRATER LAKE, July 3. (Spl.)
Nearly 65.000 persons have visited
Crater Lake national park so far this
year, setting a new early season at
tendance record. The previous high
mark came tn 1931 and had not been
quailed since.
Travel has been averaging approxi
mately 1000 visitors a day, with over
3 000 on Sundays. The majority are
from out-of-state points, especially
California, arriving mainly over the
Klamath Falls and Med ford entrance
highways.
The north entrance highway, con
necting with Diamond Lake and The
CNUies-uaiuornia nignway, is now
open to travel. This route brings
Bend within 106 miles of Crater Lake.
The rim road, around the lake for a
distance of 35 miles. Is still closed by
snow for 15 miles on the north and
northeastern sides. It will probably
not be open for another week or so.
The rim camp ground remains par
tially closed, with some camping pos-
slble. It will probably bo completely
open witnin a few days.

DETROIT, July 3. (AP) Prof. Ly
man Bryson of Columbia University
advocated use of school buildings
for any public purpose during pe
rlods when they are not in educa
tional use. In an address to the Na
tional Education association today.
"In the past," he told the teach
era, "we have lost millions of dol
lare In deterioration of buildings and
equipment while they stood Idle.
The N. E. A. representative assem
bly voted 586 to 462 to abandon the
practice of retaining past presidents
of the association on lt board of
directors.

4 eupt (3 lbs.) prepared fruit
1 cup. (3 lbs.) sugar
Vi boltl, certo
To prepare fruit, grind about 2
quarts fully ripe berries, or crush
completely one layer at a time so
that each berry is reduced to a
pulp.
Measure sugar and prepared
strawberries into large kettle, mix
well, and bring to a full rolling soil
over hottest fire. Stir constantly be-
lore and while boiling. Boi! hard 3
minutes. Remove from Ore and stir
in Certo. Then stir and skim by
turns for Just 6 minutes to cool
slightly, to prevent floating fruit.
Pour quickly. Paraffin hot Jam at
once. Makes about 10 glasses (6
fluid ounces each).

. 3 boxes powdered fruit pectta
To prepare juice, crush thor
oughly or grind about 3V4 quarts
fully ripe berries. Place fruit In
jelly cloth or bag and squeeze out
Juice. (If there is a slight shortage
of juice, add small amount of water
to pulp in jelly cloth and squeeze
again:)
Measure sugar Into dry dish and
set aside until needed. Measure
Juice into a 5- to 6-quart saucepan
and place over hottest Ore. Add
powdered fruit pectin, mix well, and
continue stirring until mixture
comes to a hard boil. At once pour
In sugar, stirring constantly. Con
tinue stirring, bring to a full rolling
boil, and (oil hard ft minute. Re
move from Are, skim, pour quickly.
Paraffin hot Jelly at once. Makes
about 12 glasses (6 fluid ounces
each). '

cational program that preceded
adoption of national prohibition was
virtually discarded in many states
when the law went Into effect, and
this fact doubtless figured In the
bringing about of repeal."
Johnson further stated that "the
league's new objectives would Include
a program (1) to promote temperance
education, (3) to eliminate liquor ad
vertising. (3) to make the liquor traf
flo pay Its damages and (4) to outlaw
llquqr traffic In Oregon.

lived together only two months.

FINE AND TERM IN JAIL

Jeffords of Baker, who was Involved
in a double automobile accident
that resulted In the fatal Injury of
Mrs. Cornelia Brown Mitchell on
the Baker-Haines section of the old
Oregon Trail this week, was fined
(250 and sentenced to 00 days tn
Jail this morning tn Justice court,
His driver's license was revoked.
Jeffords pleaded guilty to a charge
of reckless driving before the sen
tence was passed.
FUNDS ALLOTTED FOR
PUBLIC LANO SURVEY
WASHINGTON. July 2. (AP) The
pvbltc works administration an
nounced today allotment of 500.000
to the general land office of the In
terior department for survey and re
survey of public lands in 10 states
and Alaska.
The allotment Included:
Oregon, 925.000; Idaho (30,000.
The land office said surveys and
resurveys within grazing districts will
facilitate land classification and ad
ministration of the Taylor grazing act
while surveys within national forest
areas will facilitate administration of
those areas.
It was estimated 80 per cent of the
money would be used to employ labor.
