Side Camp Set Vp A side camp of
SO men from the South Fork CCC
camp has been established at Lake
of the Woods. The men will be en
gaged In the development of camp
grounds In the Rogue River national
forest at Lake of the Woods and Fish
lake. Another South pork side camp
of about 30 men will soon be estab-
! Ushed near the Imnaha guard sta
! tlon on the south fork of the Rogue
river, forest headquarters said. The
enrolleea will work on campground
development on the south and middle
forks of the Rogue.
Joins Army Announcement was
made today by MaJ. H. D. Bagnall,
army recruiting officer In Portland,
of the enlistment of Herbert E. Crow
der, son of Mrs. Lorlle Mlnnlck of
Central Point. Crowder made appli
cation for enlistment at the Medford
recruiting office June 12 and was
tentatively accepted by Sgt. Willis
8. Estep. In charge of the local sta
tion. He passed the final army tests
at Vancouver Barracks, Wash., and
i was enlisted June 16 for service with
i the 39th engineers for station in
: Portland. Maj. Bagnall also stated
there were a few vacancies remaining
for service with the 39th engineers.

To Crater Lake Ernest A. Rostel,
publicist for the national park ser
vice, left today for Crater lake where
he will be stationed for the summer.
He arrived here recently from Port
land where he was In charge of In
formation for the Paclfle northwest
region for the park service, a position
he procured after being employed as
publicity writer for Crater Lake na
tional park for several summers. Mr.
Rostel will return to his Portland
oft fee In the fall. During the past
winter he placed 1ft magazine articles
on Crater lake and southern Oregon
In addition to numerous articles on
state parks in the northwest. He Is
well known here, having been a resi
dent of Central Point and Medford
up to the time he went to Portland

NEED OF PEOPLE
PORTLAND, June 18 (AP) The
Rt. Rev. Wlll:am P. Remington. Epis
copal bishop of eastern Oregon, told a
northwest Episcopal forward move
ment conference today that Christian
people have devoted too much energy
"In planning and nurturing the par
ticular branch of the church through
which we received our own Individual
salvation."
"Sad and tragic as It it," e&id tue
bishop, "we must admit that we are
to define the church as Its great body
of baptized members, It Is largely
self -centered, Intent on Individual
salvation and paroachlally minded.'
The session here is one of five be
ing held throughout America look
ing toward the triennial general con
vention next fall. Leading ministers,
'aymen and lay women are attending
from Oregon, Washington, Idaho and
Montana.
The Rev. Robert O. Kevin, PhD., of
Klrkwood parish, St. Louis. Is chair
man of the conference, assisted by Dr.
Arthur M. Sherman of New York City,
a member of the forward movement
taff, and Bishop Edward M. Cross,
S.T.D. of Spokane, one of five btsh
opi on the movement commission.
Dr. Sherman said the church It
getting a new defenltlon of the word
"missions," from the movement and
the communicants are coming to see
that the church has a missionary re
sponsibility to "enter Into every area
of life where the principles of Christ
are not recognized and obeyed."

COMMISSION BEST
SHAPE IN YEARS
SALEM, June 18. (API Depleting
a return of prosperity to Oregon, the
World War Veterans' state ato com
mission reported today It was In the
best financial condition since 1829.
Current delinquencies on outstand
ing loans today totaled S575.078. com
pared with ai.009.885 a year ago.
Collections loi the first five months
this year were $988,914, and 803.S12
a year ago.
Jerrold Owen, executive secretary of
the commission, said lie believed the
average collections for this yenr may
set an all-time high.
The commission, which met here
today, named Col. Hiram U. Welch.
Portland, former Multnomah county
assessor, to appraise all properties In
Multnomah and nearby counties on
which the commission haa loana out
standing. Welch will serve on a temporsry
basis, probably for two months.
Members of the commission at the
meeting were Governor Martin; Adju
tant General George A. White of the
Oregon National Guard, and Prescott
W. Cooklngham, Portland. B. B. Kelly
of Medford, and Secretary of State
Earl Snell were absent.
