FRANCO'S TROOPS
PUSH OFFENSIVE
TO BILBOA'S EDGE
Basque's Plan to Blast City

Advancing Rebels.
(By the Associated Press.)
Insurgent General Francisco Fran
eo'i legions pushed a broad offensive
to the edge or Bilbao today, occupy.
lag the International airfield and
climbing the last two nuis at tne
western entrance to the Basque cap
ital.
Slowly they closed the last gaps In
their plan of encirclement and map-
ped a new drive on Bantander. 4S
miles west of Bilbao.
Indications were the march
Santander would begin at nightfall
should Franco's soldiers succeed In
bottling up Bilbao and occupying
that objective by that time.
There were rumors the Bstquea and
their Asturlan allies were planning
to dynamite the rich Industrial capi
tal rather than let It fall Into the
hands of the Insurgents.
Insurgent shock troops, fully equip
ped to cope with Bssques In last
stand street fighting, msssed at the
outskirts of Bilbao, ready for a quick
assault to "save" the city from such
destruction.
Advices reaching Bendaye on the
Franco-Spanish border said Franco's
forces bad crossed the Nervlon river
both north and south of Bllbso.'
Insurgents also were reported to
have captured three government boat
loads of a.000 refugees fleeing the
besieged olty. . .
In London, the European non-intervention
committee called a ses

In Wllhelmshaven, Germany,
Ilelchsfuehrer Adolf Hitler and high
government officials paid homage at
a military funeral to the 31 German
sailors who died In the Spanish gov
ernment bombing of the relch's pock
et battleship Deutschlsnd. New Ger
man warships were sent to Spanish
waters for neutrality patrol work.
Oeneral Franco's attempt complete
ly to unify the forces under him
brought a death sentence for Msnuel
Hedllla, former leader of the fascist
phalanx, and 14 others.

EVANGELIST MEET
Th attendance and Interest In the
evangelistic series at the Church of
the Nararene, Central avenue at
Jackson, continues at the maximum.
The Elmer Gandy evangelistic party,
leaden in the effort, demonstrate
such versatility In service as to in
terest and hold their hearers with
rapt attention and response.
Last night Rev. Gandy drew two
plctuiea, much to the Interest of his
on -lookers. The first picture he made
was Mount Pitt, with Klamath leke
in the foreground: the other was
Vernal falls of the famous Yoaemite
national park.
The singing of Mrs. Gandy and the
Instrumental ptaylng of the two
daughters Is meotig the approval and
appreciation of their nightly audi
ences. Lasc night the evangelist drew his
message from the 6th chapter of
Isaiah and the 14th verse, "Hell hath
enlarged herself and opened her
mouth without measure." The
speaker said "Hell la not an Intel
lectual question; It la the question
that Involves the destiny of life. The
tragedy of our day comes from the
fact that men are not familiar with
the truth and the consequences that
necessarily Involve them In relation
to this eternal destiny. They are very
specific In their vocational and
tradeshlp learning Involving a live
lihood here In this world, but these
are incomparable to the fact of man's
destiny."
The speaker urged upon his aud
ience the fact that men should place
greater emphasis upon preparing for
etenul life and all phases Incidental
thereto, than upon anything with
whlct they may be concerned In this
life, ?$ destiny hinges upon the re
lationship one beara to the qualifi
cations for destiny.
