An official visit will be paid to
Medford tomorrow by two car of the
Elks magsslne good-wl'l safety fleet.
Th7 will be piloted by Oeorge Stel
ttr and Joe Cooke, members of the
Order of Elks and entertainers of
considerable repute.
They carry messages of good-wlU
and Invltstloni to the Elks of Med
ford to attend the forthcoming Elks
grand lodge convention which this
year will be held at Denver.' Colo.,
the week of July lain. The cars tney
use are one,, a President state
cruising sedan, the other a Dictator
cruising sedan. '
In all, the six cars of the fleet
will have traveled at the termination
of the tour some 30,000 miles, and
will have visited nearly 300 Elks
lodges. Two other units of the fleet
left Boston, May 37th. The remain
ing two units were started from
Jersey City, May 26th.
As may be assumed, an enterprise
of this character must be conducted
with rallroad-llke fidelity to sched
ule, and It was with this lh mind
that the Elks magazine s e 1 e o t e d

An Important feature of this year's
tour Is a consideration for safe driv
ing, and the good-will fleet has thus
become more than a social enter
prise. The official title for the fleet
Is the Elks Oood-Wlll Safety Tour.

Officials were Invited to witness
a demonstration on Pelham Parkway,
Now York, conducted and supervised
by the American Automobile associa
tion which shows that speeding cars,
on General dual 10 tlrea, can be
atopped, straight In their tracks, on
wet, slippery asphalt pavement more
quickly than It had previously been
thought possible to stop cars on dry
pavement.
Following this spectacular demon
stration, the American Automobile
aasoclatlon, through Its contest board,
Issued a certificate setting forth the
results when brakes were suddenly
locked on cars traveling on wet
aaphslt at speeds of 30, 40, so and
68 miles sn hour. Engineers In many
parts of the country have since de
clared that they were amazed at the
results.
Pitted against competitive tires,

per cent leas distance under exactly
the same conditions.

liament today to give It complete
power to fight off speculative raids
on the franc and repair the na
tional finances,

In the chamber of deputies provid
ing authorization for the govern
ment "until July 31 to take by cabl
net decree any measures necessary
for the reconstruction of public fi
nances, as well as the protection of
savings, money and the public
oredit."
The government announced the de.
cree powers Would be used first "to
end maneuvers of speculators and
deserters of the franc." Finance Min
ister Vincent Aurlol estimated the
total of French capital Invested
abroad by these I'frano deserters" had
reached 60,000,000,000 francs (about
2,670,000,000.)
Solon stricken.
WASHINGTON, June 15. UP)
Chairman Connery (D.-Mass.) of the
house labor committee was stricken
with blood poisoning today. He was
taken to a hospital. A physician de
scribed the Illness as serious. Aides
said connery had returned from a
trip to Maasachusettes last night.

TOO MUCH SPEED

Alfred N. Robbins, 33. of Klamath
Falls was flnd 125 and $4,50 costs
by Judge William R. Coleman In
Justice of the peace court yesterday
afternoon on a charge of reckless
driving. He pleaded guilty.
Robbins drove a car 60 to 70 miles
an hour on the Pacific highway
south of Medford Sunday, being on
the wrong side of the road part of
the time, the court was told. He was
cited by state police.
James M. Myers, 26, of Myrtle
Point was fined $12.50 and costs for
overloading a truck, his load being
6,000 pounds overweight. On the
same charge Wlthan Ted driffen, 27,
of South Central avenue, was fined
$5 and costs, his load being a few
hundred pounds overweight. Both
pleaded guilty.
Paul J. Quackenbush. 25, who came
her recently from Portland, waa
fined $2.60 and costs for permitting
a person not possessing an operator's
license to drive his car. He pleaded
guilty to letting his unlicensed broth
er Warren, 19, to drive the auto.
Ben Geary, 40, of Trail was ar
raigned on a charge of unlawfully
lying In wait with a gun at a salt
lick. He pleaded not guilty and re
quested a trial by Jury. The trial
was set for 10 a. m. on June IS.
Geary was represented by Attorney
Thomas J. Enrlght.

to study the state probation system
and to report to the 1939 legislature.
Following suggestions made to the
emergency board, yesterday that the
board name an additional probation
ofticer. the governor said he would
name the probation commission to
study the problem with a view to re
vising the entire parole system.

state was asked to sponsor the con
vention because Oregon "has the
most successful board In the nation."
