With 10,000 spectators following In
hie wake. Ouldahl awept around the
final IB holes of golfs greatest teat
in a three-under par BO to beat Sam
my Sncd of West Virginia by two
strokes, and clip one from the open

Ou'uahl won more than the title
arts 11000 with his victory. He also
clinched a place on the American
Ryder cup team, which sails neat
week for England and the Interna
tional series.
Ouldahl took the blue ribbon of
the falrwaya with three rounds that
broke par, and ono that equalled It.
On the opening day he fired a 11.
and followed It on the second with
a SO on one of the longest, toughest
courses In the country. He "slip
ped" to sn even par 70 this morn
ing, and started the final round tied
with Snead at a 13, and one stroke
behind the leader, big Ed Dudley of
Phllsdelphla.
In that afternoon run down tne
atretoh Ouldahl gave on of the fin
est exhibitions of courage and skill
.under fir that any golf champion
ship haa ever seen. He had barely
aturted out when he waa Informed
that enead the man he knew he
had to beat had hit the turn In
par at and was going strong.
So he turned on the heat. After flv
straight para he set his eights on a
80-foot putt for a birdie on the sixth
and It rolled In. He lost It back on
the next hole when he three-putted
from the back of the green. But he
wasn't dismayed.
On the long eighth ha pounded
two msgnlflcent woods to be on the
green, 39 feet from the pin, and he
canned the putt for an eagle. He
clipped another stroke from perfect
figures with a deuec on the short
ninth.
Walking to the tenth tee the crowd
informed him that Snead had fin
lahed with a Tl. and that hla total
of 283 was up on the score board.
Tor the next two holea It appeared
that Ouldahl was ready to crack. He
was In th rough three times on the
tenth for a bogle fire, and then
three-putted from the eleventh tor
another bogle. .
But the big fellow with the cold
blood of Norway wasn't finished. He
fired a chip within tour feet of the
pin on the twelfth for a birdie and
then picked up a birdie deuce on
the short 13th. His tee shot misled
a hoi In on by less than two feet.
He certified his gamencss on the
14th when his wood second hit a
spectator and bounced Into a trap.
Unruffled, Ralph waded Into the sand
and exploded perfectly to halve his
par. And he psrred sll the others
to rivet down the championship.
