the measure came as a surprise in
view of President Roosevelt's repeated
statements that auch a eurvey was
unnecessary. Recently,' however, the
president was reported to have con
sented to an Investigation.
Under the resolution, the Invest!
gating committee will have authority
to atudy, aurvey and Investlgste un
employment and relief, Including an
estimate of the number of persons
Idle by reason of labor-saving de
vice mechanical or otherwise, The
group will be empowered to hold
hearings throughout the country and
.to subpoena all records needed.
Robinson expressed his vlswa to a
delegation of the people's lobby who
called at his office to recommend

ing the levies on large personal and

Shortly after her arrival a short
term prisoner In that ward was re
leased, placing the number of women
back to 13.
Mrs. Hopkins pleaded guilty to ac
cusations she struck her 4-year-old
stepdaughter, Barbara Irene, on the
bead with the handle of a table knife.
The child died April 17.

cherries. Crush thoroughly or grind.
Add cup water, bring to a boil,
cover, and simmer 16 minutes. (For
stronger cherry flavor, add U tea
spoon almond extract before pour
ing.) Squeeze Juice from 2 lemons.
Measure sugar and prepared fruit,
solidly packed, Into a large kettle,
filling up last cup with water If
necessary. Add lemon Juice, mix
well, and bring to a lull rollino toll
over hottest Are. Stir constantly
before and while boiling. Boll hard
5 minutes. Remove from Are and
stir In Certo. Then stir and skim
by turns for Just 6 minutes to cool
slightly, to prevent floating fruit.
Pour quickly. Paraffin hot Jam at
once. Makes about 11 glasses (
fluid ounces each).
