hind. Led by Dick Lewis, who blasted
two doubles and a triple In four trips,
and by Duke Hanklnson, who crashed
a homer with one aboard, the pre
viously victory-less Medfordltes ahell
ed two Pirate pitchers for nine solid
smacks, and made them count.
And, while hla teammatea were
busy with plenty of lusty batting
support, Larry Pepper was bending
his huge curve ball and wheeling his
smoker In there with deadly effect
iveness. The Plratea reaohed the
youthful righthander for nine hits,
Including a home run blast by Shtnn
In the eighth with nobody on, but
when the going got really tough and
the pressure waa on, the youngster
had what It took, and then aome.
He whiffed six and allowed only one
base on balls.
It waa a bristling, aparkltng ball
game, touched off beforehand by the
opening day ceremonies. Owney Pat-
ton, Medford'a oldest and most loyal
fan, finally located the plate after
several attempts, and atruck out
Mayor George Porter, who took a
healthy cut. Capt. Lee Bown of the
Oregon state police received the pitch.
Balkovlck's gang scored their first
tally In the opening frame on the
first of Dick Hoffman's pair of beau
tiful squeeze bunta. Dick Lewla led
off with his first double, acreeclier
Into left field, and when Taylor fum
bled the ball momentarily, the short
stop raced to third. Hofman dumped
the second pitch ten feet In front of
the plate, and Lewla was over with
the Initial run.
The Pirates tied It up In the second
Inning when P. Neaa singled to left
and scored when Bob Smith let Pep
per's throw on Mardln'a easy roller
get away from him. Prom then un
til the eighth stanza, when Shinn
smashed one of Pepper'a fast balls far
over Stine's head In left field for a
homer, the visitors didn't get a smell
of the plate.
Duke Hanklnson, the University of
Oregon student who Joined the Cra
ters yesterday, hit his home run In
the fourth Inning to give Medford
the lead, and the ball game. With
one away, Virgil Swanson reached
first when Shortstop W. Neaa' throw
of his bounder pulled Mardln off the
Initial aack. Hank then hammered
hla round-trlpper, the ball aoarlng
high and deep Into left centor field.
The Craters got still another run In
the fifth, and again It waa a perfectly
executed squeeze bunt by Dick Hoff
man that brought It across. Dick
Lewis started the Inning with a
tnree-bagger between left and center
field, and on the second pitch, Hoff
man once more bunted In front of
the plate, scoring Lewis.
Although they didn't need them,
the Craters went out and got two
more runs In the sixth. Hanklnson
walked with one out and pulled up at
third on Bob smith's double to right.
Hank acored while w. Neaa was
throwing out Manager Balkovtck, and
Pepper then drove nice single Into
left, scoring Smith. That settled the
scoring for the day, but It waa plenty.
The Plratea started a belated rally
In the ninth Inning. Mardln singled
to left to start It and Domlnlco.
plnch-hlttlng for Pitcher Barr, who
relieved Little In the sixth Inning,
alngled to right. Balkovlck caught
Domlnlco attempting to steal, Tay
lor fanned, and Dick Lewis took Rob
ertson's liner to end the battle.
Little, a small righthander with a
bl curve ball, waa shelled to the
ahowera In Medford'a sixth Inning,
with Oeorge Barr finishing the game,
and being touched for ona hit. Barr,
a husky starboard fllnger, displayed
a ateamlng high hard one that had
the Cratera blinded. The damage
was done, however, and his good
pitching went for naught.
The moat thrilling defensive play
of the ball game was started by Larry
Pepper. In the sixth Inning, with
Ooff on first base after a sharp tingle
to center, th. Crater hurler grabbed
W. Neat' hard drive, fired to Welly
Rlckert at second base, and Rlck.rt
lined It to Smith at first for a sen
sational double play,
Dick Lewla, because of hla great
day at the plate, waa Judged the moat
outstsndlng Medford ball player, and
will receive a load of wood donated
by the Medford Corporation. Next
to Lewis, Pepper waa acclaimed the
most vsluable player and will receive
a quart of milk each day for one
month from Oilman's dairy, Man;

Promoter Mack Llllard'a weekly grap
pling card at the Medford Armory
tonight Instead of Smollnskl and the
Black Dragon, the wrestling Impres
sarlo announced today. The hated
Diagon, arriving In town yesterday
fiom Spokane, told Llllard that he
couldn't go through with the match
because of a badly wrenched arm
received recently In the Washington
city.
No amount of pressure aa applied
by Llllard could change the hooded
one's mind, so aa a last minute
change, the promoter signed Belcaa
txo, the mad Italian, aa hla opponent.
Which la really more ot a natural,
fans consider, than the Dragon-Smo-Unskl
affair. The two meanlea have
hated each other for a long time, and
now they will have a chance to pub
licly air their feeling.
The Dragon, even though he won't
wrestle, will be at the ringside In full
regalia. This marka the second time
the hooded demon has upset the de
talla at the last minute. Once before,
he waa matched with Cowboy Dude
Chick, but ran out with the excuse
that he wanted to get In better con
dition for the champion,
Belcastro has entirely recovered
from the lame shoulder reoelved In
his last match, against Smollnskl In
Klamath Palls. The squabble ended
in a riot, with the Polish Pa look a
copping the verdict when Pete missed
a dropklck and smashed hla shoulder
against the edge of the ring, dis
abling him.
The Mad Italian haa aworn by all
.la ancestors and others that he will
g've Smollnskl the worst beating of
nla life the next time he gets him
In a ring, and tonight he will have
that chance. Both men are the
-Irtlest, most underhanded grapplera
now appearing In southern Oregon,
and the match la actually figured an
Improvement over the previously an
nounced battle between Joe and th.
Dragon.
In the main event, Cowboy Chick
will be tangling with a powerful
wrestler who knows all the answors,
In addition to being a very effective
bad man. LaDue made his first ap
pearance here laat week and Just
ubout crippled Sailor Dick Trout with
a devastating leg-breaker, with lever
nge gained from the use ot the ring
ropes, a highly ungentlemanly perfor
mance. Jack Sterllch, the Austrian atrong
man, makea hla second showing be
fore local addlcta when he facea
Sailor Dick Trout In the opening
match. Last week he fell before the
urm-breaker of Alvln Brltt, and to
night he will be meeting one of Med
ford's moat popular grapplera. ster
llch la exceptionally strong, probably
the moat powerful of all those now
showing their warea In the territory.
He Is a clean worker, and with Trout,
should atage a great exhibition of
wrestling as It should be dona.
Promoter Llllard aald today he ex
ected a capacity house.
other prizes were won by Crater per
formers. Next Sunday, Medford travels to
Roseburg, and then returns tor three
straight weeks.
