The Med ford Craters return home

After four long weeks on the road,
Manager Mike Balkovlck sends hie

psrk in the state. Opening pitch is
slated for 2:30 p. m. sharp.
Taking part In the opening day
ceremonies will be Owney Pattoa
Capt. Lee Bown of the Oregon state
police, and either Mayor George Por
ter or Ed Lamport, president of the
Southern Oregon league, Patton,
former major leaguer, will hurl the
llrat ball that will Inaugurate action
on the new turf field. Capt. Bown, a
husky, rlghthanded batter, will be
up there at the plate to take ble cut,
and either Mayor Porter or President
Lamport will don the mask and pro
tector to receive Patton 'a pitch If It
gets that far.
A score of Medford merchants have
donated prise to Crater players for
firsts." The lost pledged la a load
of wood by the Medford Corporation,
to be awarded the outstanding Cra
ter player of the afternoon, the honor
to be decided by three competent
Judges.
Play-by-play description of the bat
tle will be announced by Vlo MUnes
through loud-speaker system do
nated by Heine Fluhrer. The sound
car will be placed directly back of
home plate behind the screen.
Manager Balkovlck of the Craters
announced lat night that he waa
at'U undecided on his pi toning choice.
It would be either Larry Pepper, the
youngster with the sweeping curve
bell, or Ray Henderson, he of the
blinding speed and sharp hook, the
manager said.
Rudy Rltzman, manager of the
Pirates, will start Farthering, e husky
righthander, on the mound, with Golf
back of the plate.
Bob Smith, former Medford high
sohool star football player and mem
ber of last year's ball team, will hold
down first base for the Craters to
day. He returned from University of
Oregon last night. Hank Hanklneon,
195-pound outfielder who led tho
Seattle City leegue In hitting last
season, will also make his first Ap
pearance In Crater uniform. He ar
rived with Smith.
With the acquisition of the two
players, who are figured to provide
the necessary offensive punch to the
rather weak-sticking Craters, Balko
vlck will be forced to shift his line
up slightly. Smith will replace Virgil
Swanson on the Initial cushion, with
the letter going to the outfield. Han
klivon will see action In center field,
where Dick Sokralda holds forth Both
players will probably get in the bat
tle, Balkovlck said.
Remainder of the club will spread
out with Welly Rtckert at second!
base, Dick Lewis at short, and Dick
Hoffman on third. Malcolm Stlno will
cavort in left field, and Balkovlck
wtll do the catching.
Although atuck In the outhern Ore
gon league cellar with no wins in four
starts, the Craters ere considered one
of the toughest, flghtlnglat ball clubs
in the circuit, and with the added
power at the plate Smith and Hen
derson will provide, should rank with
the topntghters, say the experts.
So far as the Roseburg Pirate are
concerned, their second-place leeguu
standing speaks for Itself. They have
dropped only one gome out of four,
and with crescent City, are consider
ed the finest club in the league. The
team, like Medford, Is composed of
flaahy, colorful youngsters.
The lsrgest opening dsy crowd In
years Is expected to turn out for Med
ford 'a Inaugural game of the 1037
season. Both spacious grandstands
were cleaned and mopped yesterday,
and the beautiful new turf field was
mowed close. There will be a toft
drink stand In operation to quench
dry throats.
Following are the batting orders
of the two clubs:
WITH GREAT EASE
NEW YORK, June fl. (UP) War
Admiral won the 09th running of the
classical Belmont stakes today.
From flag fall to finish the chunky
little seal-brown son of Man o' War
showed the way. Not once during
the long mile and a half journey did
his tlx rivals even faintly challenge
hlra. Off on top, he stayed there, just
as he did In the Derby and the
Preakness. His time of 3:28 3-6 equal
ed the American record set by Handy
Mandy at Latonla in 1037, end beat
Msn o'War's track mark by a full
fifth of a second.
When War Admiral banged past
the Judges' atand tt was a badly
beaten fleet of three-year-olds who
wallowed In his wske. '.ie nearest
to him was the Earl Snnde trained
Sceneshlfter and he was a full throe
lengths behind. In third place was
Henry Guggenheim's Vamoose, 60 to
1 shot, and behind him was Col. E.
R. Bradley's hope, Brooklyn.
In sixth place, beaten to a frazzle,
was Pom poo n, Jerry Ouchelm'a big
colt, who finished second to the Ad
miral In the Derby and the Preakness.
War Admiral's smashing time was
all the more remarkablet In view of
the fact that he ran the full dis
tance with badly cut right front
quarter. A few seconds after he left
the post the Admiral cut himself
and when he came back for unsad
dling and the plaudits of the 35,000
customers his foot was bleeding.

MAT MAIN EVENT
Cowboy Dude Chick, Junior heavy
weight champion of the world, faces
Monte LaDue, the very tough French
man, In the main event of the weekly
grapple program at the Medford
Armory tomorrow night, and all In
dications point to one of the severest
testa the title bolder has faced tn
the local arena.
LaDue, completely bald headed al
though only 30 years old, proved last
week In his first local appearance
that he possessed extraordinary
strength. Sailor Dick Trout, no
weakling himself, did hie level best
to pin the Frenchman's shoulders to
the mat last Monday, but was no
match for LaDue, who almost broke
his leg off with the most painful leg
breaker ever seen here.
Whether Chick can overcome La.
Due'st power long enough to epply
his famous lariat spin Is a matter of
conjecture, LaDue cores little for
clean grappling, and If Chick does
procure his airplane spin he Is liable
to be cnslderably battered up before
he does.
In the middle bout, the Black
