4-H CLUB
PROJECT BACKED
BY BRANCH BANK
Bixtwn 4-H club boya in Jackson
county have cur ted work In the last
two weaka on a corn Improvement
project aponsortd by the Medtord
Branch of the United Statea National
Bank of Portland.
Corn la Increasing in Importance In
ie county and there la a need for
a better quality of earlier maturing
aeed. II la felt by thoso oonnected
with 4-H club work that a great deal
can be done through the project In
aclectlng and Improving Jackson
eounty oorn.
In the agreement algned by the
bank, the club member, and the club
agent, the bank agreea to furntah the
elub member with enough aeed corn
tc plant one acre. If the boy wanta
to plant more than that amount, he
can aecure the aeed at cost.
The bank also agreea to encourage
the boya In their work, provide ault
able facllltlea for a display of the corn
after harvest, and furnish the follow
ing awards for the beat 35-car exhibit
of corn and completed record book:
First Scholarship to 1038 Summer

Fifth, Slith, and Seventh 1.00
each.
There will also be a 18.00 special
prirc (or the highest yielding corn on
an acre baala, providing the club
member haa at leaat one-half acre.
The 4-H club member agreea to
plant and care for at leaat one half
acre of corn, follow recommended
practlcea Inaofar aa It la possible,
make an exhibit of 35 eara of corn
and a completed record book, and
complete hla project.
The club member may uae hla own
aeed If he haa It, but If he secures
it from the bank, he agreea to return
1ft pounda of seed on the ear after
harvest, the ears to be selected by
the local club leader, the club agent,
und the club member.
The county club agent agrees to
secure a supply of Early Alberta arrtl
Minnesota No. 13 corn for the bank
and distribute it to the boya deslrlnt
seed. He will also suporvlae the
planting, cultivating, harveating, and
storing of the corn and conduct tours
so that every boy enrolled will nave
un opportunity to visit other contes
tants' fields.

Agent, states that thla la the first
contest of lta kind in Jackson county,
and that there la a lot of interest
being ahown for the flrat year. It la
hla belief that next year there will be
more than twice aa many boya enter
ing the contest.

BOARD ACTS 01
STRIKE TURMOIL
YOUNOSTOWN, O.. May 38. (AP)
The national labor relation board
took a hand today In the atrlke which
let up picket lines before Indepen
dent ttael mills In six states, took
70.000 workers from their Jobs and
created growing tension In cities
when? non-union workmen remained
in besieged plants.
Ralph A. Llnd, regional labor board
director at Cleveland, began an Irves
tigatlon of a complaint filed b? ',
iteel workers organising committee;
charging the Republic Steel Corp..
one of three Independent concerns
involved, with uaing coercion to "dis
courage unionization" at Mnssllton
and Canton, O.
Llnd will recommend either that
the board drop the charea ngnlnst
Republic or file a formal complaint

point where they are very reeklesn.

Warren than anywhere else." he said,
"because there are still a few men in
ttere beside the maintenance crew
and our men don't like It,"
Jack Bnughan, a WPA worker, was
anot and wounded at Warren today
when a negro fired Into a group of
pickets, who the negro said, had pre
vented him from passing the picket
line "to go fishing." The negro said
he waa beaton and cut by the pickots.
His shot missed all pickets.

ESTRANGED WIFE
FOR MURDER TRY
OREdON CITY. May 28. (AP)
sergeant E. c. Snow of the state po
lice said Oeorge Huey, about SO,
Evergreen, died early today from
gunshot wounds which he indicted
himself, after attempting to ahoot
Ilia son-ln-lnw, Ray Hartley, Mil
waukee. Snow aald Huey, estranged from
hla wife, went to the Hartley home,
drew a pistol and pushed It In Hart
leys ribs. They grappled, Hartley
turning the revolver aside aa the
Run waa fired, the bullet barely miss
ing him.
, Hartley turned off the lights, Snow
said, and soon heard a ehot, find
ing Huey lying on the front porch
with a bullet wound In hla head.
Deputy Coroner Arnold Blerman
said he found a note In Huey'a
pocket blaming hla wife for hla
troubles.
Snow aald the note also said that
Huey went to the home to kill Hart
ley and commit suicide.

Mr. Howard said. Tourists are already
arriving, 25 to 30 car being regis
tered yesterday, he added. The fish
ing he described as good.
The road from the lake to The
Dalles-Callfornlft highway Is not yet
open for traffic, Mr. Howard said. Ho
expected tt to be cleared of snow In
the near future.
Bobby Young of Eagle Point spent
the week end with Arnold Ragsdale.
Upper Rogue Orange will hold
regular meeting June 8 at the grange
hall on Crater Lake highway.. The
4th and 3rd degrees will be given to
19 candidates.
