The "Red" Menace
WHENEVER the question of communism in this country
comes up, there are usually two definite reactions, one
the exact antithesis of the other.
From one side, nearly everything we have is communistic,
including the Roosevelt administration. Long-whiskered bomb
toting "bolos" are sneaking about everywhere, waiting to jump
out upon some unsuspecting capitalist. In another decade at
this rate, the "laud of the free and the home 'of the brave"
will be a shnmbles under the dictatorship of the proletariat
with John h. Lewis and Harry Bridges iu the White House if
there IS any White House.
From the other side, comes a reaction, the exact reverse
"Phoocy on this red scare nonsense. There are no Communists
in this country and never have becu. It's all a lot of Wall
Street propaganda, to, scare the people into voting tue Republi
can ticket, straight. Anyone that credits such foolishness is
either a neurotic or a nit-wit, etc., etc. "

A S usual both are wrong. Extremists are always wrong,
factually, which does not necessarily mean they are less
effective, than those who are solely engaged in pursuing the
truth. , ' ,
The chronic red baiters are easier to handle however, for
press them closely and they can prevent no evidence to support
their fears none that is, that any graduate of the Sth grade
would accept. ' .
But the other side, those who suffer from a 'blind spot
when a red tint suffuses the political spoctrum are more diffi
cult. For when they maiutain there are no real Communists
in this country, in the REVOLUTIONARY sense, it is up to
the negative side of the argumeut, to present the evidence.
Where is it!
The fact there is a Communist party in this country doesn't
supply it, for that party is officially on record" as. opposed to
revolution and violence, and favoring slow progress to a workers
paradise, via evolution and the ballot box.
But now and theu some real evidence does pop up, that
there is a genuine revolutionary movement, in Jhis country,
and it is supported morally, if not financially by the Russian
Bolsheviks.
There is Trotzky's announcement from Mexico City, the
other day for example,

There is no reason to doubt that Comrade Trotzky, from the
other side of the Rio Grande, finds the United States a rich field
for his propaganda and peaceful penetration, ami a large pro
portion of his "tens of thousands'' are now living aud working
within our national boundaries.
"piHS, as we sec it, is nothing to get hysterical about. On the
other hand it is nothing to ignore.
There is little question that Harry Bridges, for example, an
avowed Communist, is working under instructions from Trotzky,
and doing everything to further ivhat he regards as a sacred
cause, by stirring up ns much trouble as possible iu the American
labor movement. And there are many other trouble makers
like him.
They represent a negligible minority, wheu America's 130
millions are considered, but they should be particularly iu the

with handicapping Injustices. Acting
SEPARATELY, they can't. Hence the
sovereign rights granted to the atatea
by the constitution are not infringed
ay the legislation.
It sounds like good reasoning, .

V but not necessarily burdensome.
Old people have been supported In
the past. SOMEBODY has supported
them. There is no reason to believe
that their support, under a self-re
specting pension system, will cost
any more than- It has cost under a
haphazard LACK of system.
If everybody, when beginning work,
k would take out a life Insurance
policy, there would be little old-age
poverty. .
But everybody won't, unlesa MADE
TO.
The purpose of the old-age pension
act la MAKE everybody take out
what amounts to a life Insurance
policy.
NOBODY haa much doubt aa to the
value of old age pensions. The
doubt regarding social security Is
concerned chiefly with unemploy
ment Insurance, which la going to be

A shortage of pants created a major!
crisis today in the army air corps.
It was precipitated by a new order
by General Malin Craig, chief of I
staff.
"Subject to the availability of
trousers, all personnel of the air
corps will wear trousers and shoes ;
on ail occasions for which breeches ;
and boots or leggins arc now pre-;
scribed in army regulations."
