club and so out.
Chapter 19
Who Hit William?
HOW long I was unconscious I have
never been able to determine. I
came to lying in darkness, strapped
Sown to something that 1 presumed
to be William's bed, my hands bound
under me, a gag tied in my mouth,
snd pain playing an Anvil Chorus In
my head. It was a long time before 1
could summon enough Interest to
lavor the full horror of my position.
William was the murderer and Wil
liam was roaming the house, unob
served and unsuspectedl I thrashed
about wildly. But it was no good. Tha
traps that bound me held! After
again, frantically. .. . straining
ears caught only the sound of reced
ing footsteps and ft door closing softly.
I have had my share ot disappoint
ments, I suppose, but I have never had
another like that one. Black despair
swept me. Then suddenly a blinding
ray of light shown full on my face.
In breathless, motionless horror I lay
there waiting.
"Good God!" said Michael's voice
from the darkness. In another second
the room was filled with light
Gay was with him. They were at
ma in a twinkling. The trunk straps
that held me were on the floor and the
gag was out of my mouth. Michael's
vigorous 'slaps sent the blood flowing
into my arms and legs. My tongue
felt like a balloon. My eyes ached in
the sudden light. It was a full 10
minutes before 1 could either move
or speak and more than that before 1
did either. Mike worked with a sort
of determined fury. Gay nervously.
"William?" 1 managed at last.
"Where's William?"
"At the foot of the back stairs with
a lump the size of a house on his
bean." said Michael. "What happened.
Jim? What happened?"
At the foot of Wires were crossing
again.
"William," 1 said, "hid In this door
way and crowned me with a golf club
as I came through."
There was a long silence.
"But" said Gay slowly, "but "
"Good God!" said Mike, Then light flooded the room.
while 1 gava up the attempt, ex
hausted. It seemed Incredible that I could
have hesitated over William's guilt
My doubts about Michael and the
Skipper were forgotten and I lay there
tmpotently cursing my own stupidity.
If anything more should happen be
fore that night was over, I thought 1
could blame myself.
My bright Ideas had huddled a
bunch of women Into ft room with an
Invalid and an old man and left them
there unprotected. Worse than that
had managed to avert their suspi
cions from the guilty person and had
Instructed them to open the door to
him Immediately. Fool! Shortsighted,
doddering idlotl Was William Insane?
My flesh crept at tha thought of M.
Farrington's dismantled room and the
mangled cat Not the work of a sane
man. Not as I figured sanity.
He was mad, then. And what a
crafty madness! 1 thought of his hefty
shoulders and level, steely eyes. Why
in the name of all that was holy would
ha kill Juda Bllnshop? It was ridic
ulous, but it had happened. Again
I tried wriggling my legs, but the
circulation had gone out of them. 1
tried to move my hands. No go.
Well, sooner or later he would come
back for me. 1 supposed. It was strange
that he hadn't finished me on the spot
and made a clean job of it Time pos
sibly. Perhaps it was more expedient
tor him to get the revolver first finish
off the others, and then and then
Tha gag in my mouth seemed to be
strangling me.
1 roared and twisted and raged my
self quiet Wondering dully what time
It was, I realized that 1 was hungry.
Lunch seemed several generations re
moved and the recollection of It was
torture. 1 longed desperately tor a
cigarette. Michael! It was all up to
Michael. If only ho could show a little
more Intelligence tl.an I had, we
might still have a chance. If

Michael.
"Could ha have fallen?" 1 de
manded. Mike's face was screwed In thought
"Sure, but Good Lord, he was
clouted first! He has an awful head.
Must have been hit with something
sharp and heavy."
"Such as a golf club?"
"Yeah. There are pieces of one at
the head of the stairs." He offered me
cigarette with shaking fingers.
Horrible Little Room
AS THE match flared. Gay's voice
quavered, "Are are you sure
It was William?"
I Inhaled furiously. "Why, It must
have been. He "
But was It? William had gone
through the door. I had seen him, and
1 had not seen him come out 1 tried
to recall the twisted face that had con
fronted me. 1 had assumed that It
was he, but
"'1 don't know," 1 mumbled In be
wilderment "I thought It was. but
1 don't know."
"Think!" urgeu Michael. "You must
have seen him. Think!"
"Why, he came in here and and
Damn itl I suspected him all of a sud
den. 1 sneaked after him. He was
standing In the door with a golf club,
and he got me."
"You did see him. then," Michael
muttered. "William! It's cockeyedl"
My head was aching with the effort
to make sense. "1 saw him. Yes. 1
thought It was William, but" There
was no dodging the implication. "It
might have been someone else."
Mike rose slowly from his knees.
"1 think." he saU, 'that In either case
we'd better get back to the others."
Tha o'hersl 1 had forgotten them
completely.
"Where are they?" 1 demanded.
"Down the hall. We came out to
look tor you and found William. He
eouldn't seem to make sense, so we
took him back to tha rest and cam

As I stepped out of that horrible
! little room, 1 locked the door after
1 m. and, slipping the key Into my

Estimated to have lived from 100
million to 200 million years ago, the
huge Stegosaurua was one of the
most remarkable animals that ever
walked the earth.
The beast's tiny head contained a
brain weighing only about two and
one-half ounces but It had a pe
culiar spinel cord formation In Its
lumbar region which served as a
brain In controlling the reflex move
ments of the tall and hind legs,
menta of the tall and hind legs,
necessary by the distance through
which the animal's tiny "head brain"
would have otherwise had to negoti
ate with a command to the hind
quarters. The Stegosaurus ranged In
length from 30 to 30 feet.

Bach's Coffin
With hi genius almost entirely un
recognized during his lifetime, Jo
fcann Sebastian Bach, the great Ger
man composer and musician, was a
poor provider tor his wife and 20
children. When he died In 1760, he
left his family almost penniless.
Placed In a $4 oak coffin, his body
was carted off to the old Johannls
church cemetery In Leipzig and un
ceremoniously dumped Into a pau
per's grave. Then the quality of his
music waa discovered, his fame- grew
and Investigation was launched Into
his history. The cemetery In which
his body lay was discovered, but his
unmarked grave went unknown. A
full century passed before his resting
place came to light. Strangely enough,
Its discovery was owed to the fact
that Bach had been burled in a
cheap coffin.
In going through the records of
the Jchannls church one day, the di
rector of archives found an Item stat
ing 'that 64 had been paid for Bach's
oak coffin. Oak coffins were seldom
used In those days. A search of the
locality in which Bach was believed
to have been buried uncovered two
oak coffins one a woman, the other
a man. The skull of the man was
taken to a famous autonomist. Pro
fessor His. Investigation convinced
the scientist that the skull was that
of Johann Bach.

fractured skull at a hospital here
yesterday. Sheriff O. W. Manning and
District Attorney Earl Nott are in
vestigating an alleged altercation at
Carlton Friday.
