by the engineering section ot the
United States loreat service through
Medford headquarters ot the Rogue
Elver national forest today.
The new mechanical unit Is a sin
gle track tractor attached to which
Is a sled big enough (or 20 to 39 pas
sengers. Purpose Is to convey skllers
to snow-capped mountain tops so
that the sport may he enjoyed to the
fullest. In many areas the best ski
ing sports are difficult if not impos
sible to reach Because of the long
ascent through deep snow.
The tractor is equipped with track
oleats of duralumin to Insure light
ness end strength, outstanding me
chanloal feature Is a special power
steering device by which the passen
ger sled Is used as a rudder. The unit
turns easily within a diameter of 43
feet, the forest service statement said.
Because of the great track area and
special low gcanuga, the unit will
ellmb unususlly steep grades either
or bare ground or snow.

While no oflielsl statement was
made. It was Indlcsted that when ap
propriations Justify, one of the units
would be acquired for use on Mount
Ashland on the Aahland-Applegate
scene loop drive, considered one of
the best potential snow sports areas
in southern Oregon.
The new machine was tested re
cently near the Mount Hood Timber
line lodge and found capable of haul
ing "up-mountaln" loads of more
than 30 skiers. Oradea of 30 to 0
per cent were negotiated- without dif
ficulty. Snow depth was found no
obstacle to the tractor whose wide
base prevents It from sinking and
stalling even In the softest covering,
the announcement said. ,

ters that last week the machine con
veyed passengers with ease up to a
7,800-foot elevation on the snow

The new tractor waa developed by
the forest service as a much-needed
aid to winter sportsmen, It was ex
plained. The machine Is of general
utility and can be used for other for
est work such s trail building snd
anow removal.

Quits Hero Role;
Kills Young Girl
GRENOBLE, Prance. May 20.
CP) A great flalnt Bernard, noted

the anowy alope from the atoiied
monastery of Mount flt. Bernard
today and killed a 10 -year -old girl
before her father's eyes.
She waa so aeverly bitten she
died shortly after monks from the
hospice drove off the dog and ad
ministered first aid. The father
was unable to save her.
As la their wont, the dog, with
other Saint Bernards, dashed out
to greet the travelers near the
monastery. Monks were at a loss
to explain the ensuing assault.

BOZEMAN, Mont., May 20. (AP
Montana cattlemen gathered here
today for their annual convention,
but the only person In full cowboy
regalia turned out to be a Chicago
salesman.
Many of the ranchers and cow
hands wore range land's ten-gallon
hats, but had nothing to compare
with the Chlcagoan unidentified by
name who squirmed uncomfortably
In high-heeled boots and sheepskin
jacket.
"Times have changed," opined
Teddy Blue, 77-year old rancher and
cowboy since his teens. "It looks

SALEM, May 20. (AP) T. C.
Lorenz, Klamath Falla timber oper
ator, presented en offer to the state
land board Into today of $90,000 for
the purchase of 33,000.000 feet of
pine In the Sprsgue river area In
Klamath county.
The timber land reverted back to
the land board when a bidder sev
eral years ago felled to complete his
contract.
Lorenz stated his company had
cut timber on the Indian reserva
tion and was In position to cut the
pine In the entire tract If the board
accepts the offer. He stated he did
not want the two million feet of
fir nor the 180,000 feet of cedar on
the property aa shown In the orulse,
stating It was of no - economical
value.

Salt Lake Region
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, May 20.
(UP) Hoping for relief from dust
storms which today blotted out the
sun over Salt Lake valley and other
points, residents of Utah, Nevada,
and Wyoming awaited promised rains.
Fertile soil from sun-baked farm
lands which have received no water
for more tbn twu weeks was car
ried by a 80-mlle-an-hour wind, J.
Cecil Alters, federal meteorologist,
wild tonight.

On January 1, 1937, the nation's

083,306 cases of canned pesrs, a
csrry-over enlarged beyond normal
by a bumper 1930 crop, the marl

Molllson. British avlitrlx, sailed on
the rrench liner Normandle today,
denouncing the United statea de
partment of commerce for refusing
to grant certificates to entrants In
the proposed Lindbergh memorial
flight from -New York to Paris.
"It Is not stunt flight, snd I don't
sgree with the department of com
merce on their ruling," she said.
"They are very ftr behind the

RECEIVE DEGRE FROM
Rev. D. E. Millard, former pastor
of the Medford Christian church, and
resident of the valley since 1918. will
leave by train Saturday morning for
Minneapolis, Minn,- where he has
been called to deliver the commence
ment address to the graduating class
of the Minnesota Bible university on
May 26.
Following the address the univer
sity Is to confer the doctor's degree
upon Reverend Millard In recogni
tion of hla "special and valuable"
work In hymn writing, according to
announcement received from the
university.
Reverend Millard waa one of the
first graduates of the institution and
waa the first pastor of the university
church, known, aa the University
Place Christian church of Minneapo
lis. Following graduation in 1817, Rev
erend Millard entered war service at
the Bremerton navy yard end after
the armistice was called to the pas
torate of the local Christian church
where he spent nearly five years.
Following Rev. Millard's return on
May 39, he will be assisted by Mrs.
Millard and daughter In a series of
evangelistic meetings In Eagle Point
where the new Community Christian
church will be Inaugurated with Rev
erend Millard as pastor and leader.
School Bus Ejection

HILLaSBORO, May 20 (AP) Doro
thy Davis. IS, of acogglns valley filed
suit through her guardian. Charles
A. Davis, for $5,000 damages, alleg
ing she was forcibly ejected from a
school bus serving the Forest Grove
union high school.
George L. Hendricks and Banford
Matteson, described as operator and
driver respectively of the bus, were
named defendants In the complaint,
which alleged that the plaintiff was
ejected February 11, following a dis
agreement about where she was to
alt.

The surplus commodities corporation
Till purchase about 3.000,000 more
pounds of fish for distribution to
states for the use of unemployed,
federal officials announced. The cor
poration previously purchased 0,400,-
COO pounds in an effort to relieve a
surplus in the fishing industry.
