At Last Meeting
Reported as one of the most out
standing programs of the year was
that presented at the lsst mooting of
the Thursday Morning Study club
when Mrs. Leland Mentzer was heard
In a group of annotated book reviews.
Her reviews Included: "Something
of Myself," autobiography of Rudyard
Kipling: "The Late George Apley,"
satirical novel by John Marquahd,
which members found very entertain-
Mrs. Mentzer further discussed
'And Pear Camo" by John T. Whlt-
aker, a book dealing with internation
al relations and the economic and
political aspects of the league of na
tions as witnessed by the author. The
work is considered one of the very
best authorities on foreign alliances.
Mra. Mentzer stated.
She also reviewed "My Father's
House", also entitled "An Oneida
Boyhood", by Plerpont Noyes. son of
tl.e founder of the Oneida Silver Co.
Informal discussion of the English
coronation, fitting In with the club's
study theme for the year, history In
the making, proved Interesting tn
members. Mrs. R, C. Mulhoiland de
tcrlbed Westminster abbey from her
own observation.
Mra. Louis Humphreys spoke on
peeresses, the crown Jewels as she saw
them In the Tower of London, the
Stone of Scone and other phases of
British royal tradition. She stated
that the present Archbishop of Can-
ttrbury had been her teacher at one
time.
Mra. aienn Taylor presented brief
biographies of the Archbishop, of
"anterbury and the Archbishop of
York. Mrs. Royal Bebb discussed
coronation music and the choir of 400
which participated In coronation
ceremonies, as well as trumpets and
organ muslo of the rites. Mra. R. E.
Carley read Mssefleld's "A Prayer",
written by the poet laureate for the
coronation. Other phases of the cere
mony and Incidents of former corona
tions were also discussed by Mes-
dames Theodore Malmgrcn, Karl
Janouch, R. 0. Van Valr.nh and Lyle
Wilcox.
Mrs. Margaret Pnbrlck was hos:ess
to club members for a recent special
session during which she reviewed her
ecent tour of Mexico, using moving
pictures as Illustrations. Members
consider It one of the highlights of
the year's program calendar.

Junior Contest Purpose
To Enrich Music Life
Much Interest Is being shown In
the Junior musicians' contest spon
sored by the federated music clubs
which la to be held next Saturday in
the Southern Oregon normal school
in Ashland, beginning at ,10 ajn. Con
testants will be young voice, piano
and violin pupils of teachers In the
southern Oregon district.
Aim of such contests la voiced by
club officials aa follows:
"It la the purpose of the National
Federation of Muslo clubs, by con
ducting district, atate and national
contests, to help American music stu
dents of brilliant attainments who
are American-trained and may there
fore not be accorded the attention re
ceived by foreign talent.
"Naturally, !n a blennlum very few
young artists will be found who merit
national acclaim and professional
concert or operatic careers; but many
ot great talent will come to national
attention and will be given practical
assistance In enriching and leading
musical life of the country.
"Student musicians' contests as
sume the highest Importance, since
only through them la public attention
turned to the value of music Btudy
and Interest tn atate talent aroused
Also, advanced musicians find these
contests excellent training for en
trance Into the young artists' con

At Club Session
Mrs. Alfred S. V. Carpenter Is to
entertain members of the Medford
Garden club st her home on the Old
Stage road next Friday afternoon.
Members of the Colony club will be
special guests of the garden club for
the gathering.
Of much interest to members will
be the presence of Mrs. O. A. Krause
of Klamath Falls, who la to discuss
Japanese gardens as part of the pro
gram.
Expected to return home today are
club members who attended the state
convention of the federation of gar
den clubs held Friday and Saturday
at The Dalles. Medford residents at
tending were Mrs. C. L. Goff, Mra.
Carl Fichtner, Mrs. C. L. Gentner,
Mra. C. C. Darby and Mrs. A. E.
Reames, who has held the office of
state first vice-president.
Preparations are being made by
club members for the annual flower
show which is scheduled for June 4
and S. The show attracts many visi
tors each year and Is an expression
of the Interest and efforts of Medford

homes and city.
Of special interest to members this
week Is the Invitation extended by
Mrs. L. E. Williams to view her gar
dens where Iris are now at maximum
