"Chief Justice Hughes and Justice
McReynolds of the United States su

In recent majority and minority de-
clslona handed down by each respec

"The right of public employes to
threaten sovereignty of a state by
strikes was disposed of in the Boston
police strike.
"The state cannot and will not
enter into bargaining with labor
union organizations or their repre

for the simple reason that because
public money Is used for payment

against for not belonging to a union,

"Exemption of the state from pro

having recourse to the labor relations
board In the matter of filing charges
or complaints against the state for
any purpose whatever.
"In short, the only privilege ac
corded state employes in Joining a
union organization will be that of
paying dues and enjoying whatever
fraternal satisfaction arises there
from." When asked what he meant by
"subversive organizations," mention
ed in the second paragraph of his
statement. Governor Martin declined
to mention any by name.

1 SPRAYIN
IS ADVISED
Walnut trees are now In proper
condition to be ftprnyed for blight
control. C. B. Cordy, itMltnnt county
agent satd today.
Walnut blight la a bacterial dlncahe
that attacks leaves, nuts, catkins,
buda, and shoots of current growth,
Cordy explained. Large limbs are not
attacked.
"A 3-2-50 Bordeau spray at thlB
time will be effective in cutting down
the damage done by this disease.
There Is some danger of burn by the
use of this spray alone and so It Is
advised that one pint of fish oil or
mineral oil of the summer type be
added to each 100 gallons. This has
appreciably reduced the foliage In
Jury," Cordy said.

TURNED BY IRELAND
INTO FUEL ALCOHOL
DUBLIN. (UP) The potato Is
once again likely to become Ireland's
most important product.
This Is duo to the establishment
of industrial alcohol factories.
In thc.se factories surplus potatoes
and beets will be converted into al
cohol which win be used for heat
ing, lighting various scientific pur
poses. The potntocs are washed when
they reach the distillery. They are
then conveyed to a converter, where
they are crushed and ateamed under
pressure. When this process is com
pleted they are transferred to the
mash tun. where they are stirred up
vigorously.
Not more than 3 percent of malt
la added to the potatoes In the mash
tun. The action of the malt sac
charines or converts the potato
stnrch Into sugar.
When the mash has cooled, the
liquor or wort la drawn off Into wash
backs. The residue forms a valuable
food for stock, and la extensively
used for feeding cattle and pigs.
The wort Is then treated with
yeast. This Induces fomentation
and .when the prows is completed,
the wort becomes wash. The wash
contains alcohol, and it la ready for
distillation.
Potatoes produce 28 gallons of al
co hoi a ton, and dried potatoes will
yield 83 gnllons a ton. Barley pro
duces 72 gallons of alcohol a ton.
