Governor Merrlam announced today

Clarence D. Martin, Washington, and
Charles H. Martin. Oregon, protest
ing enactment of the Peyser bill Im
posing retaliatory bans on liquor
trade with states which discriminate
against California alcoholic beverage.
The Oregon chief executive urged
Governor Merrlam to veto the bill.
The Washington governor said he
hoped the California chief executive
would "consider this bill as an un
friendly bsrrler toward the neighbor
ing state of Washington."
Oov, Clarence D. Martin said he
was informed by the Washington state
liquor board, "probably the largest
single purchaser of California wine,"
that the bill awaits action by the
California executive end that "enact
ment of this measure may Jeopardise
present friendly commercial relations
between our states."

state's willingness to pay back wages
to Eagle Fern park WPA workers for
fighting a forest fire on private prop
erty laat November ended a, two-day
strike. "The men were the unfor
tunate victims of a misunderstand
ing between two governmental agen
cies, each of which expected the
other to pay," said E. J. Griffith,
state WPA administrator.
