(AP) Lester Brockelhurst. 23-year -old
paroled convict and former Sun
day school teacher, sat moodily In
a Dutchess county cell today, three
men dead from his gun In what
Lieutenant H. A. Gay of the a tat
police called a, six weeks' crime tour.
His victims, named by Oay from
report received from police, were:
Albln Theander, 47. Rockford, 111.,
tailor.
Jack Griffith, Fort Worth, Tex.,
tavern owner.
: Victor Gates of Little Rock, Ark.

Rockford, who had accompanied
Brockelhurst on the six weeks' trip
through the middle west, tho south
and the east. Brockelhurst also is
from Rockford.
Says Girl Innocent.
But she had nothing to do with
tho slaytngs. Brockelhurst was quot
ed a saying by Lieut. Gay.
The ex-convict, who had served a
short term In Joliet penitentiary,
111., for an armed robbery In Chi
cago In 1935, was arrested late yes
terday near Brewster when a state
trooper happened to notice that a
license plate was missing from his
car.
When the trooper saw a loaded re
volver in the car he took the pair
to the Flshklll barracks of the state
police.
Brockelhurst, blond and freckled,

"I looked him over," Lieut. Gay
said, "and Just on a chance, said:

over the country, haven't you?'
"He said, "Yes. and I pulled a
touple of murders, too."
Then, Gay said, the story came
out.
Girl Joins Trip.
Brockelhurst, formerly of Galcs
burg. 111., was released from the
penitentiary on parole, went to
Rockford. There he met the Felton
girl. They became friendly. On March
81 they disappeared from town.
On the same day. Oay said, The
ander ril?apieared with his car. Some
time later the tailor was found out
sida the town, a bullet In his head.
Lieut. Oay said Brockelhurst ad
ml t ted be robbed and killed The
ander, From Rockford the couple went to
Salt Lake City, Oay said. Then their
course turned southeast to Dallas
and Fort Worth, Texas.- On April
28 Orlfflth, the tavern proprietor,
tried to stop a holdup. A bullet was
Brockelhurst 'a answer, Oay said. .
With the girl the young desperado
next moved on to-Little Rock, and
on May 0 they started for Memphis
on foot. Gates, the third victim,
gave, them a lift. Brockelhurst hot
him In the bead. Gay said, robbed
him and tossed his body Into a
ditch.
Inspector Harold Nugent of the
state police also said Brockelhurst
had admitted the three killings.
In their wanderings, Nugent and
Oay said. Brockelhurst committed a
number of robberies, Including one
In Nashville, Tenn., and one in
Pittsburgh, Pa.
Just Riding Around.
Aftr the Pittsburgh holdup. Gay
said, Brockelhurst held up a Bakery
In Philadelphia, and then began "Just
riding around the country." eventu
ally reaching Dutchess , county. He
had planned a holdup In Plttsfleld,
Mass., Oay said.
Brockelhurst 's arrest. Lieut. Gay
recalled, was similar In circumstances
to the seizure ot Merle Vandenbush,
middle - west desperado,' only a lew
miles away at Katonah, N. Y., by a
local officer who- stopped his car
for a minor traffic violation.
Brockelhurst and Miss Fenton, who
had leas than a dollar between them,
were held' as fugitives from Justice,
and for Illegal possession of a revolver.
Lieut. Gay said he understood the
chief of police of Rockford was fly
ing to New York to seek extradition
of Brockelhurst.' x

An upward trend tn the real estate

pared by the Medford realty board
for the National Association of Real
Estate Boards. Chicago. The local sur
vey was approved at a meeting of
the realty board yesterday and rc

The plan to observe Victoria's

tion luncheon held Wednesday when
former British subjects in Medford
and vicinity gathered as a group for
the first time.
Although the luncheon was arrang
ed on the spur of the moment, 31
persons attended. It was so enjoy
able that a decision was reached to
hold similar get- togethers on special
occasions during the year.

cases of tuberculosis was made yes- j
terday and Wednesday In the annual
chest clinic sponsored by the Jack-;
son County Health association and
conducted by Dr. O. C. Bellinger, j
head of the state tuberculosis sani
tarium. Tho clinic Is financed by the local
share of proceeds from the annual

Cases receiving attention from the
clinic are those observed throughout
the year In the city and outlying
districts by the county nurses. Many
are- discovered through tuberculin
teats given In the schools. Both chil
dren and adults are given treatment
and care,
A total of 73 persons were exam
lned by Dr. Bellinger, with about 20
active casee being reported. Others
examined were either suspected cases
or those who have been in close con
tact with active Infection.

Sragg. 76. who passed away at hia
home In Talent Wednesday morning,
will be held at the graveside in the
Medford I. O. O. F. cemetery at 3:30

Miss Iyneve Slmklna, former Med
ford resident and senior student at
Oregon State college In Corvallls, was
twice honored as an outstanding stu
dent on the campus this year.
She was awarded both the Sigma
Delta Chi trophy for newswrltlng and
the Theta Sigma Phi cup for feature
writing, the first time any student
has won both honors. The first award
went to Miss Slmklns as the most
proficient beginning Journalism stu-;
dent during winter trm. She Is u
secretarial science major and will
graduate In June.

ford high school, having lived here
