Missing Merritt
Now Hurling for
Olendale Outfit
Alvtn Merritt, the promising ex-
Junior American Legion burler who
was figured to provide plenty of
strength to the Med ford ball club's
mound staff this year, has evidently
taken a run-out powder on the local
team.
Alvln, a tall righthander with
terrific fast ball, suddenly disappear
ed about a week ago after working
out with the locals seversl times
Manager Mike Balkovlck and officials
sponsors of the club,. Instigated
mild search for the pitcher but with
no success. It appeared that he had
left for parts unknown, with no for
warding address.
Always the sleuth, we decided to
track down the missing chucker, and
after many hours of Intensive Inves-
tlgatlonr questioning of suspicious
characters, and painstaking research.
we at last discovered the name
"Merritt" gracing the box score of
the Olendale-Roseburg Southern Ore
gon league opener at Olendale last
Sunday. Merritt was listed as
pitcher for the Olendale club, and
according to the report, worked the
entire 10 Innings against ths Pirates.
It may not be Medford's Merritt,
and again It may be; nobody around
town seems to be certain. However,
word from th Rogue Valley QoM club
which employed th pitcher 1 to the
effect that Alvln talked some of go.
tng to Olendsle If he could get lined
up there, so the odds are about 1000
to 1 thst It's ths same guy.
Mack Llllard. southern Oregon's
grappling Impressarlo, cam up with
th Info yesterday thst meanle Black
Dragon, at present in Spokane, would
probably return sometime In th near
future. Black Dragon wrote Llllard
very nice letter. In which he asks
Mack It "you have any wrestler In
your territory you consider bas the
stuff to give me a match that would
put me to a test; maybe even beat
e." ......
Mack aald be had nobody In mind
i present, but that Dude Ohlck
would return to the local arena May
34 and he would like to re-match
th two. Which, from this corner.
Is about th best wrestling news of
the year. If It materializes.
Other grapplers Llllard has lined
up for early appearances are Sailor
Dick Trout, a clean and fast worker
from Alaska, and none other than
Prince Mlhalakls, the Arabian noble
man. . . j
The Prince wrote Llllard from To
ledo, 0., where he states he Is packing
them In. He said he would probably
be In southern Oregon In ths near
future snd for Mack to get him some
good tough opponents.
Still another former favorite who la
due to perform here this summer Is
Bob Kennaaton. ths Mad Marine from
Oold Hill. Kennsston Is In Little
Rock. Ark., st present, but wrote
that he wanted to visit bis home
town tbls summer, and would be
open to grappling offer when be
arrived.

Medford Craters
Moniker Selected
For Baseballers
Medford's Southern Oregon
league baseball entry bas at least
been offlclslly nicknamed.
After -considerable discussion
among officials of the . Medford
Athletic association, sponsors of
ths club. It wss deemed fitting
snd proper thst ths team should
carry a name symbolto of ons of
the city's most important assets.
So, hereafter, Manager Balko
vlck's outfit will be known as the
Medford Craters.
It wss pointed out thst "Pear
pickers" and "Rogues" would have
been good choices, but that other
Medford teams In ths past had
carried those names. Something
entirely new was desired, and be
cause, of the fact that Medford
la the gateway to Crater lake, the
new name was considered a "natural."
181 PLANES VISIT
AIRPORT IN APRIL
Medford municipal airport was

lows: 35 United States army; 32 pri
vate, 4 united states marine corps,
3 department of commerce snd 117
United Air Lines ships flying on a
regular mall and passenger service.
The report said that work started
Monday on the digging of drain
trenches for an additional 100-foot
taxi strip which will run from the
administration building west to the
cross runway. The new strip will
facilitate the servicing of planes In
the fuel pits and eliminate the dan
ger of a collision by crowding, the re
