Atlanta Woman Wins High
Honor With First Book

the news that her book had won the
annual Pulitzer prize,
"I'm aitounded," waa the first re-
action of the Atlanta author. Bhe

"I'm overwhelmed."
The award for the novel of Civil
war days In Georgia carried wit It
(1,000 In cash, pittance compared
to what she haa earned from the
1,360,000 copies of the book already
printed or what she will earn from
the motion picture about to be made.
But In honor It was high, and Mlsa
Mitchell Jolna a distinguished group
of novelists who have received the
award since Its inauguration In 1018.
No Surprise to critics.
Miss Mitchell In private life Mrs,
John R Marsh was one of 14 men
and women honored with the Pulitzer
awards In Journalism and letters, an
nounced last night by the trustees
of Columbia uulvcrslty. Selection of

was one of the least surprising to
most critics.
An undercurrent of criticism greet
ed the award to the play "You Can't
Take It With You," by Moss Hart
and George a. Kaufman, as the best
"original American play, performed In
New York, which shall represent In
marked fashion the educational value
and power of the stage . .
Burns Mantle, drama crltlo of the
New York Dally News, who last year
criticized the Pulitzer drama award
to Robert Sherwood's "Idiot's De
light," said he thought "the play
chosen for a first prize should have
more distinction In writing, be a lit
tle more of serious consequence and
significance In the theater."

Sheep shearing In the Rogue River
valley will not atart until May 16
according to Prank K. Bybea of the
Jacksonville district, a large aheep
raiser. The shearing la two weeks
later than last year, owing to wea
ther conditions. By bee says the price
will be around 3to per pound, the
best In several years. He says the
price last year was 30c per pound
for Roinw river wool.

world accomplishing a twisting som
ersault from horse to horse. Includ
ed, too, In the prodigious program are
the exotic Amerlks: the Two Palls,
Hal silver and the Flying Artonys.
The opening Speotacle "Old Mex
ico," uses hundreds of actors and
actresses all In gowns and costumes

animals are part of this colossal pag
eant also.
Performances of this super circus
will be given at 3 and 8 p. m., the
doors opening an hour earlier to al

construction known aa the Hewett
system, Mr. Duff explained, and will
be made of reinforced concrete. Un
der the Hewett system, the relnforo
lng steel Is pre-stressed. This per
mits use of thinner walls and averts
temperature cracka In the concrete, a
factor which must be considered In
ordinary construction. Mr. Duff re
lated. Design will be modernistic so
that the tank will not detract from
the scenlo values of the area, he
stated.
May Stimulate Building.
The tank waa designed by J. L.
Mason of the William 8. Hewett Sys
tem, flan Francisco, under Mr. Duff's
supervision. Mr. Duff also will sup
ervise construction.
The water department Is now ser
vicing 87 residences In the area to be
benefitted by the stand-pipe. Mr.
Duff said. Hs sdded that' the tank
ought to stimulate building In the
section, because not a few persona
have abandoned plans to occupy or
build homea in the district because
of the fire hazard and the lnadequecy
of the water aupply even for domestic
use.
The tank, Mr. Duff said, will In
crease pressure an average of 40
pounds to the square Inch. The
pressure at present, he added, ranges
from a maximum of five pounda In
one residence to 88 pounds In the
home most advantageously situated.

have been living with our fingers
crossed lest a serious fire bresk out.
There hss been sbsolutely no fire
protection at all. Whenever a fire
starts, no mstter how small, Chief
Roy Elliott has to send out every
piece of equipment the depsrtment
owns Just to be on the safe aide.
Even the department's pumpers have
been of little use because In eummer
months there Is practically no water
to pump."

the fact that the area Is only slightly
lower than the level of the reservoir,
part of it actually being above the
reservoir, he stated

Particularly enthusiastic waa the
prolonged applause that greeted ap
pearance of Jacqueline McKee, the
sensational 13-year-old soprano, who
more than lived up to her advance
notices. Not only the audience but
the entire chorus took her to their
hearts, won by her charming sim
plicity and exquisite beauty of her
voice. Another soloist who covered
himself with glory waa George Peck
bam, basso, beard In a group of songs
which brought out tbe full measure
of hla remarkable range.
The chorus numbers were flaw
lessly performed under the Inspiring
direction of James Stevens, with per
sistent demands for encores follow
ing the rendition of each group.
Tonight the two organizations will
appear In Medford at the high school
auditorium under auspices of the
Medford Klwanls club. A large num
ber of Klamath Falls people who at
tended last night's concert signified
their Intention of coming to Med
