WITH GIANT RAY
Monster Weighing Several
: Tons Attacks Freighter
in 'Vermillion Sea' Use
Steam Winch in Fight
LONO BEACH. Caul.. April 80.
(API An ancient Mexican e atory,
heretofore considered a legend, had
official confirmation today when
aallori on a freighter, heavily laden
with ateel, described a two-day battle
with a giant stingray.
The story was told by Oapt. P. Fink,
kipper of the B. S. lwls Luchen
bach, and J. B. Ahern. first engineer.
Off the southern cost of Mexico.
In waters declared to nurture the
most ferocious of all sea creatures.
Cspt. Fink said, the weighty freighter
suddenly slowed to a third her nor
mal speed. At the same moment, the
lookout saw a huge white surge of
water roll over the bow.
Wrapped on Prow
Bailors hurried forward. Peering
Jnto the blue-white depths, they saw
the monster, wrapped around the
prow.
Hhey estimated It was 50 feet
across and weighed several tons. Its
pointed, razor-sharp tall was approx
imately 30 feet In length, and with, It
the ray churned and thrashed the
sea to foam. In a titanic drive against
the direction of the ship.
Jabbing and prodding with boat
hoops, the crew attempted without
success to dislodge the beast. Actu
ally, they lost ground. It began
working Its way up the bow until It
was able to strike at them with lta
tall.
Meanwhile, despite forced draught,
the ship was falling behind schedule.
When darkness fell, their efforts
stopped. They no longer could see
when It struck at them. Captain
Fink said he warned his men that
one sweep of the raly'a tall might cut
a person in half.
Maclitnc Rigged
The next morning, Ahern and the
engineers rigged up a machine to
fight It with.- Heavy grappling hooks
were attached to huge steel cables,
and .these were connected with a
steam winch.
Not until late afternoon did they
"gaff." The steam was turned or
The cables creaked and groaned. The
ship swung to.
It was nlp-and-tuck for a mo
ment. Then the monster was torn
loose. Mortally wounded. It slipped

MINNEAPOLIS. April 30. (AP)
While 67 policemen listened to a
lecture on bow to be better police
men. a woman came In and band
ed Cspt. u E. Bowery, the speak
er, a telegram.
Later he asked the officers to
wrlta a description of the. woman.
"She was about 20 years old," one
wrote. "About 40" said another.
"A light blonde," was one descrip
tion, while another officer said
she was "quite dark."
Only one got all the elements of
the description right. He wound
up with this line:
"She has a run In her right
stocking."
off the hooks and sank beneath -the
waves.
For centuries, Mexican flahermen
and pearl-divers In the "Vermillion
Sea," the Gulf of Lower' California,
have told creeping stories of how the
giant ray attacked their small boats.
They said the boats either sank un
der the enormous weight or were
smashed to pieces.
This story. Captain Fink said to
day, is no legend.

Americans Pass Up
Coronation Jaunt
NEW YORK. April 30 (UP) Hun
dreds of Americans with an oppor
tunity to rub elbows with royalty are
high hatting the coronation of
George VI by staying far from Eng
land, it was revealed today as steam
ship lines reported a wave of cancel
lations of reservations. Liners that
had expected to carry full lists are
sailing with many cabins empty.
Excessive ballyhoo, London profi
teering and the fact that England
bad switched kings was given as the
general reasons why many Americans
are turning cold shoulders.
