Daring Pilots, Fast Boats Compete Sunday In Emigrant Regatta

Over "aeons of the fastest boats
and the mot famous drivers on the
Pacific coast are marking time today
preparatory to answering the start
ing gun of the Med ford 20-30 club's
second' annual outboard motorboat
regatta on Emigrant lake Sunday af-
ternoon. The first event will start
at 1:30 sharp, with succeeding races !
following In rapid succession until j
the completion ox the 10 event.
Sponsored by the Oregon Outboard
Racing association and staged under
the official sanction of the National
Outboard Racing association, the re
gatta will be one of the most im
portant to be held on the Pacific
coast this year. Led by Ward AngtMey,
national outboard champion of last
year, the entry list reads like a who's
who of the great water sport.

Three Local Boats

Portland, headquarters of the Ore
gon Outboard Racing association
which is In charge of regatta en
tries, the following drivers have sig
nified their Intention of competing:

In addition to the above well
known drivers, three local boats man
ned by local drivers will be entered.
They are Howdy Murray, a profes
sional who will operate one of Heine
Pluhrer's craft; Jim Dalley of Daily's
Auto Painting shop, and Lea Oilman.
All are experienced drivers and will ,
have speedy boat under them and 1
they have Intimated that they will!
give the world famous drivers enter
ed all they ak for In the way of
competition.
Fair Driver Enters
Lending a feminine touch to the
meet will be Mrs. Mlllot, wife of her
famous racing husband, Ernie. She
will drive one of his boats, and la
rated one of the outetnndlng women
drivers on the coast. Ethel Plue of
Portland will also drive her own craft
In several events, and reports from
Portland are to the effect thnt she
makes It tough for many male driv
ers. The regatta annually draws thou
sands of spectators, arid this year for
the first time, they will witness In
action every type of racing boat and
motor known to the game. Two heats
of midget races were added to the
already crowded program by the Oro
gon Outboard Racing association.
The midget and service hydro classes
will be run for the first time in
Oregon Sunday.
More Entries Loom
Several late entries are expected
to be received by the Oregon Out
board Racing association before post
time. Included Is Tommy Carstens of
Seattle, one of the best-known driv
ers on the coast. The final entry list
will probably contain 25 or more
names.
Spectators will be informed of ac
tion on the water through the med-

Much credit for the large list of
entries Is attributed to the unceas
ing efforts of Heine Fluhrer, 20-30
club officials said. Fluhrer, a rabid
motorboat enthusiast, contacted
many of the famous drivers who will
enter, and It was through his coop
eration that the local organization
was able to stage the most Important
regatta to be held In Oregon this
year,

Ready For Opening
SAN FRANCISCO. April 30. (AP)
From the well-outfitted sportsman
with shining new tackle to the
youngster with a bent pin and worm,
100,000 fishermen will cast the year's
first files and spinners tomorrow as
the 1937 trout season opens on most
of California's lakes and streams.
Northern California will furnish an
army of 60.000 anglers, the fish and
game commission estimated, and
4C.000 were expected to try their luck
n the southern part of the state.

Over 100 track and field athletes
from six southern Oregon high
schools will assemble here tomorrow
afternoon to compete tn the huge in
vitational meet staged by Medford
high. Opening event will get under
way at 1:30 p. m.
Schools entering squads In the
meet, the second to be held In Med
ford this year, are Ashland, Grants
Pass, Rose burg, Medford. Kerby and
Phoenix. Each team Is allowed three
entrants In all the 14 events, with
scoring being given for four places
on a 5, 3. 2, 1 basis.
Handsome trophies will be award
ed Individual winners In the 100 and
440-yard dashes and In the relay
A trophy will also be presented the
victorious team. The trophies are In
the form of a statuette depleting a
track athlete in action and were do
nated by local business firms. The
100-yard dash award will be known as
the Toggery trophy; the 440-yard
dash award as the BUI Gates trophy;
and the relay award as the Lamport
trophy. The trophy to be awarded the
winning team has no donor to date.
Two-Hay Battle
Because little Is known regarding
the strength of Roseburg and Ash
land, the meet is figured to be a two
way battle between the squads of
Medford and Grants pass. Kerby and
Phoenix, class B outfits, will not en
ter full teams.
In two meets so far this year, the
athletes of Coach BUI Bowerman
have drubbed L. L. Deal's Cavemen
twice ,once here and once In Grants
Pass.
Several personal" battles between
Tiger and Caveman runners are ex
pected to furnish plenty of thrills.
Heading the list Lb that between
Medford's Chris Barker and Gordon
McCoIlum, two of the fastest mllers
In the state. Marker won the north
west Junior championship in Port
land last year and McCoIlum" showed
his heels to the rest of the pack In
tM district meet.
In two meets this year, Barker
holds one win and one draw. At Med
ford two weeks ago, the Tiger flyer
finished In front by eight feet ind
one week later, the two crossed the
line neck and neck.
Werner After Revenue
The versatile McCoIlum also holds
a win over Rusa Werner, northwest
Junior record-holder In the half-mile.
He beat him to' the tape last week
In Grants pass in 3.22, and the local
runner has sworn to avenge that
startling upset tomorrow.
Still another man to man duel
win take place In the 220-yard sprint
when prue&s of Grants Pass tangles
with Tycer of Medford. The latter
won the event In Medford but Pruess
evened the count tn Grants Peas last
week by breezing the distance In 23.2.
Tycer'a time In his win was 24 7.
A large crowd Is expected to at
tend the meet, which will be run
off with little delay between events.
Coach BUI Bowerman, meet director,
announced that everything was In
readiness, with a small army of of
ficial starters, and Judges thoroughly
trained In their respective duties.
