Coroner's Jury Finds Four
Year-Old's Death Due to
Violence at Hands of
Father and Step-Mother
ROSEBURO, Ore.. April 33. (AP)
Pour-year old Barbara Irene Hop
kins, who died Saturday night at
Canyonvllle, came to ber death
through "external violence commit
ted by Leonard Hopkins, her father,
or Cordelia Hopkins, her step-mother,
or by both of them." a coroner'a
Jury held In a verdict given at an
Inquest conducted here last night.
Both the father and atep-mother
are held In the county Jail In lieu
of 85,500 ball, being Jointly charged
with Involuntary manslaughter.
Statements of Dr. D. E. Faxon,
who Joined with Dr. E. B. Stewart
In conducting the post mortem ex
amination of the child's body, ap
parently formed the basla for the
Jury's verdict.
Reporting that death was due to
a blood clot covering the right side
of the brain, Dr. Faxon declared that
the "hemorrhage was the direct re
suit of external violence."
He told of finding 62 bruises on
the child's body and nine on the
scalp, and said that from their col
oration It was apparent they were
caused within a period of from two
to 48 hours preceding death.
Corporal Paul Parsons of the state
police and Sheriff Percy Webb told
of questioning both Mr. and Mrs.
Hopkins and aald that both had ad
mitted whipping the child the day
before her death. The officers, how
ever, said that both parents denied
unduly severe punishment.
Neither the father nor the step
mother were called to testify before
the coroner'a Jury.

A moment later, she herself was
on the stand, telling how she met

Belief Unshaken
Assistant U. 8. Attorney Jack Pow
ell asked If she still believed Gable
was Bllltngs.
"I still feel convinced he Is one
and the same man."
"You couldn't possibly be mtstak
en, could you?"
"Not unless there Is a living double
for him."
By that time. Gable had left the
court room, not to be recalled. Powell
said he would close his cross exami
nation today and the testimony
would end.
On trial with Mrs. Norton 1 Jack
L. Smith, a private detective. Frank
Keen, Canadian hotel man, has been
charged In the Indictment with her.
The government proved Gable has
never been In England. Mrs. Nor
ton's attorneys contend she made
"an honest mistake" In Identity.

to their jobs, got Into the plant.
Rocks were hurled at the machines
and the driver of one was struck
on the head. His car wavered momen
tarily but continued.
Several other auto load of workers
' daahed down Waterloo road and did
not enter the cannery.
The battle halted momentarily
when a school bus, loaded with chil
dren, passed.
. Then the fighting resumed fur
loualy amid the shouts of pickets.
"Everybody with a gun come on,"
one man screamed. "Come up to the i
front lines," shouted another.
"Walt until the rest of the gang
arrives from 'Frisco," cried another.

The choking clouds of tear gaa
enveloped a group of newspaper and
camera men on duty In the strike
zone.
Many gas shells were fired nd
some of the pickets grabbed the mis
sies and threw them back at the
highway patrolmen.
About 75 special deputies massed
Inside the strong wire fence, topped
by barbed wire, when the gate was
thrown wide open to permit entry
of workers and trucks.
Windows in the warehouse were
smashed by rocks, but about 160 moie
workers succeeded in entering the
cannery.
At 9:43 a. m. the picket were call
ed off by J. C. Fltagerald of the la
bor council, who told them oTer a
loudspeaker to return to their head
quarters. Plea For Peace
Fitzgerald then addressed the
crowd and said:
"My message to you is that we
are ready at this time to have the
State Federation of Labor to agree
to allow an adequate number of the
people we represent come Into this
plant and allow the wheels of this
Industry to revolve again.
"If you agree to this truce you
must leave theae premises and allow
the field crops to come unmolested
into these canneries.
"I now ask you people to leave
these premises and hope and plead
with you to refrain from any action
which will be mlalnterpreted aa. a
gesture against friendly and amicable
settlement of Vila dlsput."
The pickets appeared reluctant to
leave the scene but finally departed.

bery, will probably be granted a sus
pended sentence and returned to
Omaha, Neb., where his mother re
sides. The two youths at the point of a
pistol held up Robert F. Cronln, .pro
prietor of Shady Springs service sta
tion, taking 6.25, leaving half the
money In the till. Cronln at first
thought the robbery was a prank,
and laughed at the youths.. They ad
vised him it was no laughing matter.
They were captured a short time
later by Ashland city police.
The Teasltores are former residents
of the San Diego, Cal district and
four years ago moved to the Eaple
Point district where they have an
apricot orchard.
