FREED ON BOND;
Demonstration Staged by
Negro Throng As Father
j Divine Released After New
York Police Arraignment
NEW YORK. April 23. (API
Marked by a shouting demonstration
of 1.000 cult followers. Harlem's self
styled Messiah, Father Divine, was
arraigned by Magistrate William par
tell today on a charge of felonious
aisault and released on 500 ball.
A Jostling, noisy crowd of negroes
milled around the squat little leader
as he was taken from the courtroom
after providing ball.
A dozen burley detectives and po
lice battled in vain to forte the man
who calls himself "God" through
the surging throngs, who screamed
"Father! Father!" In a crescendo
chorus and threw handkerchiefs and
pocket books high Into the air.
Divine waa arraigned under the
name of George Baker.
Four Followers In
Pour other negroes, all cultlsts,
were arraigned with the "father" on
iimilar charges of felonious assault,
resulting from the stabbing of Harry
Green, a white contractor, of Wee
hawken, N. J., in a riotous, flare-up at
Divine's so-called "No. 1 Heaven" In
Harleni.
" Hearing was set for April 30.
Green, now recuperating from his
stab wounds In a Harlem hospital,
had accompanied a process-server to
the black-belt cult headquarters to
serve Divine with a summons In a
civil suit.
The dapper, smooth-shaven evan
gelist, arrested after a two-day hide

at Mllford, Conn., after his followers

to hie arraignment In court.
Denies Assault
"Did you strike Green?" Police
Captain Thomas Dugan asked.
"I did not, your honor." the cult
leader replied, as though answering
a Judge In court.
"Did you direct anyone to do so?"
"No, your honor, I did not."
"What waa the cause of the
trouble?"
"I was not tne cause of the trou
ble", the prisoner said, wrinkling his
high forehead in annoyance. "I was
preaching at the table and looking
at the organist and preaching on "Hie
Great Enthusiasm, aomeone snatched
me and some others started to push
The crowds pushed and I pushed
back. Then someone snatched me."
The crowd began to gather long
before the self -proclaimed "prophet"
was due to appear. Intermittently
shouting "They can't Jail Ood," and
he's atlll God to us!"
UaJl Departure
And when the arraignment was
over, they hailed his departure with
cries of "Victory! Vlctoryl God Is
tnck on earth!"
There was no question of their
continued faith In the little man
whose slogan "Peace! Peace It Is won
derful" has allegedly led hundreds of
his disciples to turn over all their
worldly goods to his "kingdom."
At Mllford yesterday. In the cellar
of an "extension heaven." Captain
C iarence Douglass, Detective George
C'Hara and Patrolman Ernest Kelly
discovered him crouching behind the
dust-covered furnace. Kelly saw
something move, In the basement
gioom, and he made a shrewd guess
"Come on out, Father Divine," he
said sternly.
"Peace!" a voice quavered. "Peace!
I'U go with you. Peace!"
And from the gloom stepped Father
Divine. The cellar was dirty, but the
little brown man was immaculate.
