"I have never heard of a quad
angular meet where the entry w.is
limited to two men," the Medford

that matter. I will enter three ath
letes In most of the events, and If
Deal wants to scratch one of them
he can do so."

distance man, and Gordon McCol

event of what appears to be a sweet
card. Brltt, not overly blessed with
color but extremely popular because
of his clean wrestling, will tangle
with the best drawing card, month
in and month out, to ever appear
here Pet Belcastro, the very mad
Italian. Mean or clean, and he can
be either, you have to hand It to
Belt-astro. He packs them In, and af
ter all's said and done, that's what
counts.
Since leaving here several months
ago, both Brloaetro and Brltt have
let no grnsa grow under their busy
feet, Pete has been on a tour of the
southwest, appearing In Arizona,
New Mexico, Texas and southern
California, and according to Pro
moter LI Hard, is in the best shape
of his long and colorful career. Brltt
ha confined his grappling activities
to Los Angeles and vicinity, and en
gaged In one title bout, falling to
recapture his Junior heavyweight
championship from Cowboy Dude
Chick when he was eliminated on a
foul.
In the middle event Monday night,

The Medford Gun club will hold
I Its second registered trapshoot of the

The program wll consist of both
skeet and regular trapahootlng with
trophies . lor both branches of the
sport. There will be a 60-blrd skeit
contest and 10 singles and 50 handi
cap targets In the 16-yard game. A
doubles event also will be shot,
The added bird system will be
used In the contests, thus giving the
beginners and low average shooters
an equal chance with crack shots
for the prizes. Usually, in these
events, tho low average shooters win
the prizes.
With a two-day shoot, probably
to be held by the Medford club in
May. and a four-day state tourna
ment In San Jose, Cal end the throe

Balkovick Says Medford
Has Making of Fine Club

Intensive training for the Sou the -ern
Oregon league season really began
for the Medford ball club yesterday
afternoon as Mike Balkovick, newly
signed manager, sent his charges
through a- tough two-hour workout
at the fairgrounds field.
"From what I have seen so far,"
the manager said after hi first ten
sion with the team, "It look like
we will have a pretty sweet club"
The turnout yesterday was rather
small, but what It lacked In quan
tity It more than made up for In
quality, hustle and fire. About lb
players answered Balkovick practice
call, and after an hour of hitting
practice, with Eay ErlckAon serving
them up, went Into the field foi
Infield and outfield practice.
Infield Looks Good.
Yesterday was the first time the
team was able to work on ground
bails, double plays and other Inner
garden maneuvers, and the result
brought a large grin to the new skip
per' face. With Donovan on third
Dick Lewis at the short patch, Wally
Rlckert on second and1 Virgil Swan
son on first, it was Immediately ap
parent that the infield would be the
least of Balkovlck's worries. The
quartet handled the ball in near
mid -season form and Donny Dono
van, especially, loosed leady to opin
the season.
The short, husky third baseman,
who played with Medford two years
, ago, fires bullets across that riia
imond. His uncanny ability to thrvw
I strikes to first base from any posl
! tton and his amazrug ease of motion
stamps htm as one of the finest in-
fielders to ever perform locally. Dono
van hit over .400 with Medford two
years ago In the Southern Oregon
circuit.

Hoffman on third, Buddy Howard
on second and Sammy Van Dyke on
first. There was little to choose be
tween the competing players, ind
when Virgil Swanson retired after
catching a ball on hi fingernail,
which split, Hoffman tried his tiand
at first with Van Dyke. Both fielded
the post nicely.
Hot With Wat Club.
Outfielders chasing fly balls were
Johnny Smith, Ray Lewis and George
Oitxen, and they gave a bint of po
tential offensive power by smashing
the ball far and wide during hitting
practice.
Along with Manager Balkovick be
hind the plate was Conrad, a new
comer from eastern Oregon, Short
and heavy set. Conrad looked like a
nice receiver. Balkovlrk displayed a
machine-gun arm, and figures to do
the catching for the local in case
nobody better shows up.
The squad will work out this after
noon at 5 o'clock at the fairgrounds,
and also tomorrow afternoon at the
tame time. The club travels to Wfl
Sunday to tangle with the Sons of
Italy of the Northern California lea
gue in the final and only practice
game before the opening of the sea
son, May 2 at Grants Pass,
