PROPAGANDA SEEN
AS
BY PEACE TALKER
(Continued from Page One.)
and children by German soldiers.
That, McKalg stated, was one of the
principal reasons America was drawn
Into the war, and that now It had
been proved nothing more than
propaganda.
'Making the world safe for democ
racy was another ghastly Joke," the
speaker declared. "At present, 68 per
cent of the democracies at the time
of the World war are now dictator
ships under fascism or communism.
And as for the 'war to end war
theme that was shouted at America,
It la a known fact that nations hate
each other more now than ever be
fore. '
Criticizes Churches
Mildly blasting the churches and
clergy of America, he stated that
"We could have been kept out of war
If the churches and preachers had
turned thumbs down on It." How
ever, he explained, clergymen all
over America are today aligned sol
idly against America entering Into
another war on foreign soil.
He told of how Senators Norrls and
LaFollette were "crucified" In the
press and from the speaker's plat
form because they voted against
America's entering the war and of
how he, himself, waa chased out of
several towns where he was sched
uled to address Granges on peace.
McKalg fiercely attacked the huge
steel and munitions manufacturers,
asserting that because they had lent
the Allies almost a billion dollars,
they favored America entering the
war so that they would be assured
of receiving back their loans.
3-Part Program
Three principal steps In the pro
gram to keep America out of a for
eign war were pointed out by Mc
Kalg. They were: (1) In case the
question arises whether or not
America goes to war, the people
should vote against It; (2) let the
government take the profits out of
war and the preparation for war and
nationalize the munitions industry;
(3) Strengthen the neutrality laws.
Paul E. Elliott, executive secretary
of the Pacific Northwest Institute
of International Relations, which Is
to hold a conference on the Reed
college campus In Portland July 5
15, explained the organization of the
Emergency Peace Campaign and the
"No Foreign War Crusade." He said
that 1,00 0.0 00 was needed to carry
out the program, about equal to the
amount being spent by the govern
ment every eight hours for war prep
arations. The Rev. James Hamilton Intro
duced the speakers and thanked the
Boy Scouts, schools and churches for
their cooperation in helping to bring
the two men to Medford and for
their cooperation In the crusade. The
Rev. Mr. Hamilton is local chairman
for the campaign and pastor of the
First Christian church.

RIDING ON
A PASS
The appeal of the "pass" is the lure
of "something for nothing."
We wonder tf we realize when "rid
ing on a pass" that some one or
group Is paying our transportation? i
When by some means we have suc
ceeded in buying some item of mer
chandise for leas than Its actual val
or In other words have gotten
"something for nothing" do we ever
stop to think that some one or ft
number of other people will have to
pay MORE THAN THEY SHOULD for
this or some other Horn In order to
replace the loss which has been your
gain.
Intriguing as this lure may be,
our reason forces us to realize that
the "law of compensation" la always
working.
That In order to receive we are
compelled to give.
Just suppose we all rode on ft pass.
Who would pay the expense account?
During our many years of business
In Medford we have never believed In
"riding on a pass" or that we could
either get or give "something for
nothing!"
Our Policy has always been ONE
PRICE TO ALU and that price a
FAIR PRICE!
