SYNOPSIS: Eve Mannersfield
starts housekeeping in her 200-year-old
home (with orchard) in
Connecticut after five years in
New York. Finally gay city-loving
Denny gets a good job and
they can be married. Meantime,
George Cleveland. Eve's steady,
dependable neighbor, falls in
love with her. Living with Eve
are Uncle Henry, an old family
friend, and serious little Judge
Featherstone whose carefree
parent have left for Hollywood
without paying their board bill
to Eve. Denny deserts Eve in
anger when she won't turn out
Judge.
Chapter 32
George Stands By
r TNCLE HENRY, coming In from

ter the milking, asked no questions.
He had managed somehow to reassure
Judge. If he noticed anything differ
ent about Eve, walking to and fro be-twe-n
kitchen and dining room like

trying to smile. She went on piling
Up dishes on the sinkbord. scraping

of the warmth. The work was some
thing to put between herself and all

Uncle Henry put a strong gnarled
hand on net shoulder.
'Daughter, you stand itllL Go on
upstairs now and get a bath and take
off that thick dress and put on some
thing cooler. Take your time to It
This place will keep."
His voice was authoritative. She
found herself doing as he said.
The cool water on her .ense body,
th mere routine of . change and
freshening, of po vderlng and brush
ing her hair and putting on a freshly
Ironed pongee frock, of slipping Into
socks and canvas sandals, did give
her a certain relaxation and sense of
elf-control.
She wondered ho- Uncle Henry
came to be so wise.
When she came downstairs again
he and Judge had set the card table on
the portico facing the green, flower
set lawn and Its vista of orchard and
aky beyonr There was a cool breeze
out here fresh anc smelling of roses
It was after seven, still light She
could hear the lap-lap of her brook
Judce. too. had been sent to change,
and was fresh In his crash shorts and
leather sandals
She lelt the coolness and beauty of
the evening dimly through the numb
ness, and talked she could hear her
self talking pleasant!) enough,
praising the lettuce and radishes that
Uncle Henry said were "from Oliver's
garden" and drinking milk thirstily,
though she did not seem to be hun
gry j "Oliver's afraid his folks having to
go visiting in uch a hurry is going
to put work on you," said Uncle Hen
ry, "but I tell him with two such
handy men as he and ar, and two
less . do for. there'll be less work
instead of more."
He told Judge to clear away.
"Should he?" Eve remembered
what the doctor said.
'Tonight, yes. It'll make him feel
better to be useful," whispered Uncle
Henry "Seems as If he' got all the
jlf-respect in the family."
He sent the 11 ..tie Loy to bed as soon
as he had come back from paying his
devoted nightly visit to his pig. He
settled back In his accustomed chair,
lighting his pipe.

"TTfELU now daughter? Oliver says
'V the. dldn leave the money
you'd been counting on. 1 think we'd
better do some planning."
His undiscouraged voice and the
fact that she lid not have to go all
over It with him were a comfort
but his next wordr hurt ber sharply
'That is, unless young Carter is set
tling heis with you right away. I
sort of thought you'd be Axing that up
today"
' So had she oh, so had she and
Denny both. She managed to shake
her head.
"No We cant manage It now." She
couldn't talk about it to hi i
"So." That was all he said, going
on to the next thing. "Well, I don't
guess and you don't likely that
they'll be able to pay up very soon."
"They said they would send the
money from Hollywood as soon M
Petpr got his lob."
"M'hm. Sort of a crazy place, Holly
wood, I've heard tell; not the sort
that encourages good Intentions. Don't
count on It. daughter."
"1 don't"
Things fett quieter. Uncle Henry's
slow itend voice, dealing with the
situatlnn as If it could be coped with
one way or another, brough every
thing into a quieter focus. . After
alt. Oenny often had these flfshes of
heat-liRhlnlng nger. at oice sullen
and furious; it was lust dumb bad
luck thnt he'd had one on top of this

seemed i.ireal. here in U a quiet
"Well. now. daughter." Uncle
Henry went on. "1 been thinking
things over while t was milking and
1 have in idea."
She plnnced up In surprise. "About
money?
"M'hm. Evelina, would you feel u
was beneath you to have me set up
a roadside vegetable stand? From
now on well be raising more green
stuff than we can eat We can put it
by the road on the lot beyond the
front lawn. This road's a by-pass,
there's lot of traffic already. And U
you wan tea to take orders for rolls
and bread like your Aunt Llna did,
that would help too. 1 don't think you
can count on renting this late."
Eve thought fast li Den hadn't had
this fit of temper Just when she needed
to discuss plans with him! . . . Well,
the main thing now was, they did
have to have money. And these plans
were as good as any. . . . She could
pick somebody up. surely, to carry
on here with the house and all the
rest of it, U Den insisted on her set
tling in the city this summer; though
when they'd talked ' it over he
wouldn't surely. His passion for good
times would be sated by i few more
o. Mill's gilded weekends. He
couldn't go on insisting she give Judge
up. -
"Very she said resolutely.
"And will yo.. ask George U his
mother still wants to buy my lacquer
cabinet? That shoull cover the
taxes."
"You're a fine plucky girl. Eve,"
said Uncle Henry; and then: "You
better as.: him yourselt You could
have had your pick of those twr young
men. And 1 hoped you'd pick right"
She didn't answer; she only patted
the hard old hand he had laid on her
knee.
George's Gesture of Help
XTEXT day was a whirl; telephon
ic lng half the morning to Aunt
Una's old list of customers, dashing
down with Adriano to put up a notice
In the post office when he went foi
George's mall, ordering supplies, lis
tening to Judge's excited solemn
plans for saving money, arranging
with George about the cabinet
He vould write his mother imme
diately, he said. As to the Feather
stones, he said .o thing at all except
"' have such a bad temper that J
have practically no use of It; if 1
started to talk about your friends,
I'd say too much."
He flushed as he spoke, and his lips
took the set that Eve knew by now
meant ss he said, high temper con
trolled. He added:
"Eve, if there's anything else on
earth 1 can do. you will let me. won't
you? Don't forget . got you Into this,
in a way sendlnr you off with the
kid. And I'm glad I know you. Eve.
You're pretty fine a well as as all
tr-e other things we aren't going to
talk about"
He was leaning In at her open
kitchen window, where she was stand
ing at the long table making out lists
at supplies His blue eyes looked
straight Into hers. In spite of the hair
that had been red when h was little
It gleamea now where the sun beat
down on his uncovered head and on
the strong sunburned neck above the
unbuttoned collar of its iportshirt
there was steadiness an dependabil
ity In everything about George Cleve
land. It wr a comfort to know he was
her friend.
"1 won't forget" she salu, smiling at
nlm. He reached through th window,
nearly broke her hand with the pres
sure of his quick tight grcsp -was
gone Eve sensed, not for the fir Ft
time, the intensity that was almost
frightening undei the kind cool man
ner. But there was enough to do with
out thinking about Georgel She fell to
her lists again. She .?ould show
Denny when he came back that she
could earn money, that she could
carry on gaily.
So far as summer people went the
Mannersfield house had stood for an
unbroken dynasty of baked stuff for
20 years now Evb had only to stop
refusing to tak orders, ihe had some
already, lust from going down to the
post office and telling Emily.
So when Jn ol man and the little
joy and Eve sat on the portico that
evening uating their bread and mitk
and scrambled eggs In the sunset, she
was honestly heerful George's first
gesture if help. It appeared had been
to buy the shiniest of the new bi
cycles that the local hardware store
afforded, snd present it to Judge.
And Judge, understanding that by
making deliveries he would be pay
ing his ay with Eve, beamed with
content.
"You've dow h fine thing for that
child." Oncle Henry told her after
Judge had run of. to try his bicycle
again, excited and proud. 1 guess
he's had to take charity pretty nigh
always. And it's ground him, young
as he Is. I havent handled stock all
my life not to know humans too.
' He's j throwback to old Judge
Allaire, is fine a man as ever lived.
Out he's sensitive; he'd been a ruined
boy If this summer hadn't happened.
And, child, don't you get downhearted
because his people were lightweight
and fooled you There are those that
are responsible and grateful, I'm one.
You'v done a fine thing tot me too,
giving me a chance to earn my way
till 1 coutd do something etse and I
don't forget It"
"Oh, UncJe Henry, whatever would
l have done without you? We're all
living on ;our greenstuff now, like
locusts!"
He smiled and patted her hand.

horrible sight she had witnessed two
weeks before that of her week -old
baby lying on the ground, his bead
barbed In by one of the brutal In
dians who had raided her home
forced her husband to flee with her
other seven children and taken her-
wlf and her nurse. Mary Neff, prison-

Now she lay on a wigwam floor,
quartered there with her nurse, 13
Indians and an English boy who had
been held captive for more than a
yoer. The three whites were watting
for a restless warrior to Join the oth
er Indiana in aleep. Nowl She
reached over to where she had a
tomahawk hidden, arose, brought It
down on the head of the Indian lying
nearest her. He died without awaken
ing. From Indian to Indian she went
striking a lethal blow to each In the
manner which ahe had learned from
observing her victims' method of
handling the tomahawk.
A brave awakened. It was too late.
Hannah with her comrades got to
him before he could defend himself.
A little Indian boy was spared and a
squaw managed to escape. The other
ten savages were dead. Then came
the moat ghastly moment of the
whole affair. Painstakingly, Hannah
Dustln went to each corpse, scalped
them with a knife and make off down
the river In a canoe with her two
comrades and ten dripping trophies.
The trio, after going through tre
nicndoua hardships, arrived at Haver
hill a few days later. They were
awarded 9350.00 apiece for their hero
ism by the general court of Massa

a white he made his living In the
United States as a farm laborer,
winding up In New York as a saloon
bartender.
Shortly after his return to Eng

Poltgnac prizes in 1913. In 1930.
Maaefleld was made poet-laureate of
England.
