Garden," Junior high operetta to be
given Friday evening, open In the
garden of Colonel Staunton' home In
Kentucky. Living at the plantation
are his niece, Jeanle, and hla neph
ew, Phillip. A surprise party la be
ing given by Colonel Staunton In
honor of Jeante'a birthday. Richard
Morgan, Phillips roommate, arrives
from college In the north to spend a
lew days with hla friend. He ts in
troduced to the colonel, who discov
ers that Richard haa been bewitched
by the charms of Jeanle, who In turn
Is allured by hla gallantry. The col
onel la Indignant, assuring Richard
that his niece shall be courted by
southerners only, and orders him to
leave next morning.
Next evening a reception Is to be
given In honor of Stephen Collins
Faster who is visiting in the neigh
borhood. Hilarious comedy Is provided by
Henry Blow, a prospector of the '49
gold rush and Widow Hannah Larkln
who has burlea three husbands and
la anxiously looking for another
with the help of her new "beau
catchers." An exciting climax is reached when
a Hindu magician appears and steals
Jeanle's priceless ruby, an heirloom
given to her as a birthday gift by her
uncle.
How Hannah gets her man . and
Richard rights himself with the col
onel adds much to this clever and
delightful operetta to be presented
by the Junior high school's combined
glee clubs in the school auditorium.

RECEIVES THREATS

Mattson revealed today new threats
have been made against members of
his family, but he expressed confi
dence his son's kldnap-slayer soon
would be captured.
The father of slain Charles Matt
son, 10, said lives of Muriel, his 15-year-old
daughter, and William,, 16,
his remaining son, have both been
threatened. He expressed belief the
threats were from "cranks."
In the first Interview granted since
Charles' body was found in an Ev
erett, Wash., thicket Jan. 1 1 , Dr.
Mattson disclosed the threats came
In the flood of letters delivered at
his home every day since the kidnap
ing last Dec. 27. The last. It waa learn
ed, was mado less than two weeks

A "barn dance" sponsored by the
Associated Student Body waa held
April 18 in the boys' gym In an ef
fort to raise funds for increased stu
dent body activities.
The gymnasium was attractively
decorated and presented a familiar
barnyard scene.
Approximately 200 students, alum
ni, and faculty members were present.
"The dance was a great success
and everyone had a good time," stat
ed Richard Thlerolf, business manager.

noon. Speaking in opposition to President
Roosevelt's court program, Mr. New
bury said the executive and legisla
tive branches of the government are
linked by politics and declared the
court should be kept Independent of
the two political divisions.
In commenting on the opposition
to one-Judge majorities, Mr. Newbury
stated that out of 12 supreme court
decisions against new deal legisla
tion only two were 5 to 4 rulings.
The American Bar association op
poses the president's program 8 to 1
and the Oregon State Bar association
44 to 1. Mr. Newbury emphasized.

BALLOT TITLE ISSUED
FOR TAX LIMIT PLAN
SALEM, April 20. (AP) Attorney
General I. H. Van Winkle paved the
way for active circulation of peti
tions for the Initiative measure lim
iting taxes on real property and pro
viding a limited exemption on per
sonal property when he Issued the
ballot title for the constitutional
amendment today.
The proposal would fix a flat rate
of 110 on real property having an
assessed valuation up to $2500 and
would exempt payment of personal
property tax up to a value of 1000.
The initiative proposal was filed by
Charles B. Gibson and 19 other resi
dent of Portland to be voted upon
at the 1038 election.
