European Travels
Among Medford resident planning
vacations away from home this aum-
mer are Mrs. Alex Sparrow and her
daughter. Miss Harriet Sparrow.
The two left last evening by train
on the first part of a Journey that
will take them to Europe. They are
to go first to New York City and will
sail from there April 37.
Mrs. Sparrow and her daughter
plan visit In England, Scotland and
several countries on the continent.
They will be away, most of the sum
mer, returning home In about three
months' time.

three months ago to make their home

with her mother when Mrs. Perreault

Chinese Art Is
Subject of Talk
At Study Group
Chine? art was the subject of a
paper presented by Mlas Elizabeth
Burr at the April meeting of the
Travel Study club. Mrs. R. R. John
son was hostess for the affair at her
home on Keene Way Monday after
noon. Ancient records show the arts to
le a true medium of expression of
the Chinese people, Mlsa Burr related.
A history of their development ts

buck as 6000 B. C, she pointed out.
Mlas Burr stated that teachings of
Buddha and Confucius often form
the subjects of arts, as well as Inci
dents of family life and symbolic de
tail, Burh as the lotus and dragon.
Remarkable rraftsmanshlp Is shown
In del late carving of wood, stone.
Ivory and Jade, and embroidering of
textiles and painting on silk are
found among the earliest work, as are
also the making of pottery and porce
lain. Miss Burr said.
Work with bronze, brass and
lacquer is typically Chinese, accord
ing to the speaker.
"The House of Exile" by Nora Wain
was reviewed by Mrs. R. H. Paxson,
who pointed out that the author lived
for many years as an adopted daugh
ter of an aristocratic Chinese family.
The book, Mrs. Paxson said, Is the
story of the life of the Lin family
who have been established In the
family home through 35 generations
and Is a revelation of Information on
the Chinese manner of living.
