Portland Wanted At Medford
A framed diploma, an award from
the Illinois Agricultural society to
William Stewart and sons of Han
nibal, Missouri, has a dramatic alg
nlfleance In connection with the mar
velous development ot the fruit In
dustry in the Medford country. The
swsrd was msde In October, 1856, snd
was tor the 35 best varietlea of fruit.

Mr. Joseph Stewart was a member of

tract of 180 acres In th spring ot
1885, when It was known as the old

now th George Marshall, place, and
two years later planted about 78 acres
In apples and peart.

ford district and the Rogue River val

grown now, as well as garden pro
duce, alfalfa, clover, winter bluegrass
end other hays and grains ot all
types. Tomatoes of exceptional flavor
are produced and canned In Jackson
county, and acroage ot Spanish onion
is rapidly Increasing.

itself in an early abundance of fruit
