ness. He Is the father of Archie Bow
man. Condition of Frankte Bowman who

Laat Friday tha girls' physical edu
cation classes again divided Into
groups of red and black to play vol
ley ball. The games will last about
two weeks and are to be played dur
lng clasa periods. Miss Degermark,
instructor of physical education for
girls has spent the last week teach
ing rules of the game and they are
now ready to play. When weather
permits they will play volley ball as
well ss other sports outside.
Ten points may be earned towards
a. A. A. letter by playing at least
one-half the games that are played
in volley ball. Points may be also
earned by roller skating, bicycling,
horse-back riding, tennis, biking and
golf.

'LEI STUDENTS WALK
SALEM, April 13. (P After auth
orising the purchase of 36 new trucks
and bodies for the stats highway de
partment, the board of control held
up today the purohaae of a new -automobile
for the state board ot higher
education, with the comment "Let
the students walk."
The car was requested for trans
portation of 30 to 36 students in
the advanced course In surveying at
the state college. The distance to
be traveled would be between five
and ten miles.
"Let's suggest they walk, aa many
pioneers did," Governor Msrtln de
elsred. "That march wouldn't hurt,
the students." The requisition, how
ever, was not rejected, but action
postponed.
REJECT WAGE OFFER
PORTLAND, April 13. (AP) Tab
ulation of ballots at the Portland
labor temple revealed last night a de
clslve rejection on the part of Colum
bia River Loggers and Sawmill Work
ers of the offer of 10 per cent wag
increases with a minimum boost of
7H cents an hour.
Thirteen thousand ballots were cast
w!th the vote between 3 and S to 1
apalnst the proposal of 36 logging
operators and employers.
The Columbia district council of
the Lumber and Sawmill Workers
union had requested a horizontal in
ciease of 10 cents an hour, elimina
tion of a Joint employer-union arbi
tration board and control of loggers
hiring halls, now directed by tha
state labor commissioner.
39 ENTER IN MARCH
8ALEM, April 13. (AP) -Forty-nine
prisoners were let out of tha
state penitentiary during the past
month while 80 new ones were ad
mitted, Warden James Lewis reported
to the board of control today.
Lewis said many of those discharg
ed had either served their terms or
were paroled. Some of the paroles
came under the new law granting
good time credits.
The population of the penitentiary
today was 1075. it had reached 1100,
Lewis said.
