SAN FRANCISCO (UP) The world
U headed for a major tussle with the
sun, scientist of California and
Washington, D. C, believe.
It will not be the first major
struggle the world has had with
the sun, but popular credulity dur
ing the past 300 years has estab
lished great faith In the belief that
during these periods of the sun's
greatest tempestuousness thn"o are
among other things, great precipita
tion, crop failures, famines, panics,
war and pestilence.
In any event the next tussle be
tween the sun and the earth Is not
expected to take place until 1039 or
1940, according to advice sent to
various California nstronomlcnt ob
servatories by Dr. Charles G. Abbot,
secretary of the Smithsonian Insti
tution In Washington.
Unfortunately, however, the rec
ords of the past 300 years Indicate
these periods of sunspot maxima on
the sun last for about 30 years.

Sixteen Sunspots Seen
The first Indication that the world
was approaching another period of
sunspot maxima was made recently
by astronomers at the Mount Lick
and Mount Wilson observatories In
California when a sunspot necklace
of 16 sunspots was discovered orna
mentlng the sun. They reported the
Inct and other observatories through
out the United States verfied It.

centuries that the world might be
facing a new crisis, Dr. Abbot Im
mediately sent out all available In
formation on sunspoU and what
may be expected from the new series.
According to this scientist the world
la Just about half way between the
maximum and minimum of sunspots i
which in reulity arv tempest,
thousands of miles in diameter In;
the atmosphere.
Dr. Abbot believes that the num
ber of sunspots will continue to be
come greater and greater from month
to mouth for the next two or three
years until the curve of activity
reaches about twice its present
height. The next maximum of solar
tempestousness will be reached
about 1939 or 1940 he believes.
Definite Link Not Certain
Dr. Abbot concedes that the re
lation between sunspots and weather
Is com pi lea Ud . It depe nds much
upon the extent to which sunspots
accompany, or are responsible for,
changes In the Intensity of solar
radiation. It has been found that the
suuspots often go In pairs. The mag
netic polarities of the sunspots al
ways are opposed.
However, ever since sunspot have
been discovered, scientists all admit
they have been associated at least
in popular belief with various
cyclic terrestrial phenomena, and the
maxima have sometimes been stress
ed as heralds of disaster.
While the scientists do not attach
much Importance to the popular be
liefs that the maxima of these sun
spots bring crop failures, war and
pestilence, they admit that changes
In the earth's magnetic field appear
In complete synchronisation with
changes In the sunspots. Great sun
spots often seem to be direct pro
moters of great magnetic disturb
ances and aurora borealls displays.
These at least affect such activi
ties as telegraphy and radio broad
casting and may have even more
profound effects than have as yet
been discovered.
However, as to popular beliefs that
war. famine and pestilence are ac
companied by these necklaces on the
sun, the best that Dr. Abbot li able
to say may be summarized as follows:
"It might be quite possible to
show that there have been major
wars during each of the 30 yeara of
sunspots maxima In the past three
centuries, or that such wars short
ly preceded or followed such max
ima, but It must be remembered,
however, that few years have passed
without a major war somewhere on
earth. The same can be said for
panics and famines. If there la any
relationship. It Is too far elusive to
be discovered to date,"

gift which will deck sparkling trees
this year reflect the front page news
of 1B36 and the modern trend of
the times.
King Edward's coming coronation
has produced glamorous seed pearl
Jewelry reminiscent of the old Ed
wardian epoch and a host of gem
med hair ornaments to -tuck. Into
Yuletide packages for women.
"Spanish mantilla" lace head
dresses for evening wear and lace-
trimmed handkerchiefs show the
effect of the rebellion in Spain. A
wealth of new tricks In luggage shows
the traveling tendencies of a world
that has begun to globe-trot again.
The entire array of selections fol
lows the modern's demand for gifts
which are both useful and decorative.
Perfumes For Every Gown
The Jeweled gadget iVr women are
the most colorful they have been In
years. Besides the seed pearl jew
elry (lockets, car-rings and clips
covered with the tiny pearls), there
are clusters of gold flowers centered
with turquoise, coral or1 pearl bead
"seeds" to ellp to the front of a
frock, black enamel bracelets with
detachable Jewel fan clips at each
end and gold starfish pins.
New compacts are made of dull
finished metals designed on as clean
cut lines aa the figures In a geometry
textbook. Perfumes appear in both
clear and colored bottles In scents
for all types of gown and mood. One
of the newest perfume gadgets Is a
set of five bottles providing scents
for every kind of clothes in the
wardrobe from evening costumes to
sports togs.
For Traveling
The gift luggage and travel acces
sories seem to anticipate every need.
New bottle bags trim little affairs
lined with bottles and Jars have re
placed the older and larger "fitted
case." Bote of three silk envelopes In
graduated alzea are ready to carry
the lingerie, stockings and handker
chiefs of the woman traveler and
compact manicure sets provide care
for her bauds.
The same forethought has been
given to travel accessory presents
for men. Something new and dif
ferent Is a clothes brush with a re
movable lid top under which Is

long been a favorite.

For children the shops offer a
wide variety of gifts. Building sets
which will construct anything from
a barn to a skyscraper, Marionette
sets, rainy day play seta and paint
ing outfits, replete with brushes and

offerings. New stationery Is sten
ciled with animals or nicknames,
and books have cardboard illustra
tions which pop up when the book
Is opened. There are also many new
travel books for Juvenile readers.

bright ribbons and colorful accents.
One of the most striking touches
for a square package is a tiny shin
ing Christmas tree fashioned of
transparent drinking straws of cel
lulose film. This is the way it Is
made: Bunch 180 drinking straws
together with the ends even and
wind spool wire twice around them,
about two Inches from one end. Pull
the wire tight so that the straws will
flare out, then twist the wire, spread
the straws evenly and cut Into tree
form. Hold red sealing wax over a
flame until It Is soft and then touch
the ends of the straws with it, leav
ing little red spots to give color
to the tree.

"You Can Draw," by Prances
O'Brien Oarfleld, is Just what its
title promises for anyone with the
least talent, and la also a book that
will help a discouraged teacher for
It thesis Is backed by experience
and Illustration. Another useful
book this time for the youngest of
readers or listeners Is Lillian J.
Bragdon's "Tell Me the Time, please,"
which is pleasingly Instructive.
Raymond L. Dltmars presents "The
Book of Living Reptiles," with maps
and pictures by Helen Ca rter, suc
cinctly authentic. "Mild Animals,"
by Julius King. Illustrated by Allan
Brooks, la for younger readers whose
tastes run to squirrels and rabbits
and wood-chucks. "The Adventures
of Mr. Ramshaw the Engle." by Cap
tain C, W. R. Knight, la not literary,
but It Is diverting to rend of a
"tame" and performing eaglo who
stops in hotels.
"A Treasure Ship of Old Quebec,"
by Ethel Hume Bennett, is rich In
history and In the telling, while
"Susannah: A Little am With the
Motilities," by Muriel Denlson, Illus
trated by Marguerite Bryan, has his
tory and charm, too. For young
American patriots "Champions of
Democracy,' by Joseph Cottier, Is
thoughtful and sincere.
For the earlier American scene
there Is "Wampum and Sixpence."
by Marjorlc Hayes, a talo of Con
necticut 300 years ago. "Jerry and
the Pony Express." by Sanford
Tousey, will Interest little boys who
love horse and excitement. "Hen
ner's Lydla," by Margurlto De
Angell, Is a lovely book for little
girls dealing with the Pennsylvania
Dutch section of this country. In
"Wigwam and Warpath," by Isabel
Juergcns. the young reader Is given
brief biographies of famous Indians.
"Pablo's Pipe," by Frances Eliot,
la a colorful Mexican story for In
between ago readers, while for those
a little older Ooeffrey Household's
"The Spanish Cave." Is Just the
thing with the scene laid along the
Spanish coast and plenty of mystery.
For the very wee ones there aro
a number of plctiuv -story books.
Ono that will go straight to the
heart and the Imagination of the
little children Is by Edith Holden
Cooke, illustrated by Lansing C.
Holden and Its title Is "The Bratch
eta." Helen Sewell's "Peggy and the
