aon County Chamber of Commerce
today took stock of its "eat more
turkey" campaign and found the re
suite gratifying.
Chamber' officials said they were
encouraged not only by the Increased
consumption of turkeys but by the
spirit of cooperation that has pre
vailed on all sides. The Idea to help
Jackson county growers to reduce
surplus supplies of the birds through
Increased consumption met with pop
ular fancy more quickly than any
other campaign pf recent years, they
stated.
With fc 33 1-3 percent Increase In
production In the county and a 35
percent Increase in general through
out the United States over that of
last year. It was feared that growers
would be stuck with a large percent
age of their birds after the Thanks
giving marketing. The asserted cut
ting off of the Alaskan and far Pa
cific markets and the fear of large
buyers that they would be unable
to get the birds Into cold storage
In case of a transportation strike In
sympathy with the maritime tie-up
restricted the normal outlet . and
added to the growers' woes. Increased
supplies and restricted markets had
a depressing effect on the price of
the birds and producers feared they
would have to continue costly feed
ing far beyond the normal marketing
period. It was to relieve growers of
the feed burden that the chamber
initiated It 'eat more turkey" cam
paign. 60 Percent Sold
R. Q. Fowler, county agent, report
ed that 60 percent of the county's
supply had been sold for the Thanks
giving market and credit for at least
part of this good showing was at
tributed to the chamber of com
merce. Practically all of the organizations
in the county got behind the cham
ber's campaign and assisted mater
ially by serving turkey lunches and
dinners, officials pointed out. Indi
viduals helped also by serving turkey
at home before the holiday and by
sending gift birds to friends and rel
atives in various parts of the coun
try. All stores tare reported a greater
sale of Thanksgiving turkey than in
past years, chamber officials said
The chamber announced today It
would continue ,tta" campaign in an
effort to market the remaining 40
percent of county supplies before the
end of the year. It urged the con
tinued consumption of turkey before
as well as on the approaching
Christmas and New Year holidays.

with the announcement that the
Phoenix Orange would serve turkey
sandwiches at its dance tonight and
that the Upper Rogue Orange would
do the same at Its dance at Rogue
Elk tomorrow night.
Chamber of commerce officers said
that as fur as they could ascertain
Jackson county Is the only place
in the country where m community
movement has been carried on to as
sist the growers through increased

Appeal To Chains
SAN FRANCISCO. Nov. 37. (AP)
The nation's turkey growers, some-
what belatedly, have "discovered" the
chain stores.
Pacing financial disaster through
Inability to market the nation's rec
ord production, they have turned to
the chain stores for help.
The chain stores took a quick In
terest when turkey growers In some
parts of the country offered the birds
"on the hoof" at ridiculously low
prices. Some offers in Arkansas and
Oklahoma went aa low as 6 cents a
pound.
Establish Depots
The chain stores threw about 34,
000 selling depots into action. Con
fident they have moved a great vol
ume, they lacked sufficient reports
today to say whether a record for
sales had been hung up.
The campaign will be continued
to Christmas. The crop has been esti
mated at 20,000,000 birds over that
by grower associations with a com
plicating feature. The turkeys this
year are big birds.
The chain stores have made par
ticular effort to Induce customers to
buy large turkeys. Advertising and
price concessions have been used to
this end.
Prices Vary
George Maklns, general managor of
the California Turkey Q rowers asso
ciation, figures his association sold
some 480,000 birds In the Thanks
giving market. Virtually all offerings
were taken, despite holding prices at
the 31-23 cents opening figure at
wholesale. There were extensive re
tall sales In San Frnnclsco under and
around those figures.

Inspired by the deplorable shortage
of beds, existing in the state tuber
culosis hospital this year, workers
have promised the most vigilant
campaign In history.
"The menace, still here, will spread
If we relax our vigilance In the
slightest degree," Is the message of
the health association, to be carried
In seal sale letters throughout the
country. The co-operation of every
citizen, however small It has to be,
la urged In the campaign as every
cent Is used to eradicate tuberculosis.
Last year the gross sale of seals
amounted to $1806.13 In Jackson
county, which meant that on an aver
age each person Bpent 8.4 cents for
Christmas Seals.
An average sale of six seals to each
person would bring the total to $1,
976.08 and the Jackson County
Health association would retain
185.05 or 60 per cent oi the amount
for work within the county, where no
one can be secure agaluAt the dis
ease as long as It exists within the
community.
Support Urged
An average sale of seven seals would
bring 2304.26 ana the health asso
ciation would retain 1497.77 or 66
per cent of the rnoney for work In
Jackson county.
The more money Jackson county
gives to the battle against tuberculo
sis, the more money her organisa
tion retains to treat every person af
flicted In this county and to protect
every home from the afflicted, Mrs.

TAKEN BY DEATH
Andrew Milton Vannyl died at a
local hospital early this morning of
septic poisoning after an UlnoAs .of
three months. He was In his 'Jlst
year.
Mr. Vnnzyl was born at Melvtn.
Iowa, FVbruary l, 1916. the second
son of Mr. and Mrs. James Vnnzyl
of Sanborn, Iowa. He came to Cen
tral Point List March and went, to
work for David Wilson. Ho was taken
ill last September. His brother Ralph,
came out to be with htm.
Ho !s survived by his parents, a
brother, Ralph, and three slaters,
Anna, Lillian and Ruth, all of San
born, Iowa.
The remains will be forwarded by
the perl ftmernl home to the family
home in Iowa.
Schade Now Open
In New Location
The Larry Schade Jewelry store Is
now open for business In a tempor

store. This space will be occupied
until arter the first of the year. Mr
Schade says the new room will enablo

ago, when real estate promoters were
"selling" the future of the desert
country around Tucson, they prom
ised prospective buyers the desert
eventually would "look like a mse."
Although the desert never actually
las resembled a rose, it nevertheless
has borne an abundance of fruits
and vegetables, bcr.ldes expanding to
national prominence with Its crops
of alfalfa and cotton.
M. I. Reld. who came here In 1920
from San Francisco, claims the record
for variety. On 24 acres, Reld pro
duces: More than 50 varieties of citrus
fruits, oranges, limes and lemons,
grapefruit, including the rare pink
variety, 17 varieties of grapes, kum
quats and loquats, papayas, mangoes,
guavos, passion fruit, chermoyas, sa
patos and pomegranates.
He also has many varieties of
shrubs, trees and plants.
Irrigation, supplied by Roosevelt
cam and Coolldge dam Is credited
with supplying "life" to the barren
desert.

F. O. Northrup, 73, a native son of
Portland, whose parents crossed the
plans to Oregon, died Thanksgiving
Day at his home near Oresham.
Northrup's mother came to Oregon In

1 tablespoon chopped onion
1 tabtespoon chopped green pepper

4 tablespoons flour
1 cup tomatoes

8 cups cooked macaroni A
I teaspoon salt
teaspoon paprika
2-3 cup grated cheese
Melt butter, add and brown, onion,
add pepper, celery and flour. Add to
matoes and water. Boll 3 minutes.
Add macaroni, salt, paprika and '
the cheese. Pour Into buttered shal
low baking dish and cover with re
maining cheese. Bake 30 minutes In
moderate oven.
Baked Spiced Apple Sauce
8 cups sliced apples
1 cups water y
- 2-3 cup sugar
(g teaspoon cinnamon

I lemon slice
Add apples to water. Bake 35 min
utes In covered dish In moderate
oven. Add rest of Ingrdlents, uncover
and bake IS minutes. Servo warm or
cold.
