IS GRADE OF OIL
The secret of continued mooth
anti-knock performance with your
new ear la In the motor oil you um,
retner wan tne geeollne, according
to Information disclosed by Union
Oil company's research engineera.
Most cara when new will perform
wnnouc anocxing on a good, first
grade gasoline, th engineers said.
The cause of knocking In most cases,
Ihey found. Is the accumulation of
carbon formed by the motor oil used.
Tests conducted by Unlon'a research
atsff proved this carbon bulld-up la
much fsster than ordinarily believed.
In a series of tests conducted during
th past two years with mora than
100 oars, run In eicess of 360,000
miles, the carbon accumulation with
the average oil In 3500 to 4000 miles
was sufficient to Increase the octane
requirement of tha engine an aver
age of nine polnta or sufficient to
Induce serious knocking.
With Triton motor oil, tha carbon
accumulation In tha aama cara was
so little aa to raise the engine's oc
tane requirement less than two points
in 450 miles so little that the motor
never reached the knocking point,
according to the engineers. Those
tests proved. It Is claimed, that a new
or clean motor run with Triton will
alwaya operate without knocking on
any grade of gasoline that was satis
factory at the start. Reason for this,
they explained, la that so little car
bon la formed by Triton that com
bustion within tha motor burns It
off aa fast aa It develops.

Two entirely new Oldsmobllei for
1037, each distinctively different and
original In body styling, and offer
ing many Important advancements in
mechanical design, are being given
their first public showing by Olds
mobile dealers throughout the coun

tha Oldsmobtle, which Is now on dis
play at the J. J. Osenbrugge show
rooms, and the Oldsmobile eight
culminates the buslets development
period In the four decades of Olds
mobile progress, according to Mr.
Osenbrugge.
The cars are longer, lower, roomier
and more comfortable , than those
which made Oldsmobile sales history
In 1634. The motors provide greater
reserves of power with lower engine
speeds, with corresponding Improve
ments In both performance and op
erating economy. The Six now de
velops 95 horsepower, sgalnst 90
horsepower In the 1930 model; while
the Eight develops 110 horsepower, an
Increase of 10 horsepower over the
previous Eights. Wheel baaes of the
Six and Eight have been Increased
respectively to 117 Inches and 134
Inches.
The two cars are entirely different
In appearance, each having a char
acter and Individuality of Its own.

eight die-cast horizontal grille lou
vers, deeply recessed and plated In
chrome. Hood louvers are of a triple
horizontal bar design which harmon
Izca with the radiator grille. Head
tampa are gracefully atreamllned.
Equally definite Individuality has
been designed Into the front end of
tha Oldsmobile Eight. On this se
ries, the engineers neve employed a
dle-csst grille of square mesh design,
plated In chrome and outlined by a
chrome trim moulding.
Deeply valanced front and rear ten
ders, massive chrome plated bumpera
and bumper guards, running boards
covered with heavUy ribbed moulded
rubber, and steel wheels with massive
subs of polished chrome, add further
distinction to the smoothly contoured
all-steel bodlea of both Six and
Eight.
Despite tha Increased power of tha
1937 englnea. an appreciable Improve
ment In fuel economy haa been
achieved, largely through lowered en
gine speeds and Improvements In tha
carburetlon and manifold systems.
In the new engines, automatlo con
trol la exercised over the operation
of the choke, the spark advance.
Idling speed, engine temperature and
the fuel mixture.
Safety glass la standard through

the Fisher no-draft ventilation sys

Upholstery la of the luxurloua pil
low type usually found only In cus

An Improved Oldamoblle design of
center control steering la employed
on both cars, aa are two-way ahock
absorbers, front and rear. Dual ride
stablllzera, one In the front and the
other In the rear, are Included In
the 1937 Oldsmobile features. '
Many other mechanical Improve-
menu contribute to the excellence of
the new Oldsmobllea. Among them
are sturdier resr axle construction.
larger wheel bearings both front and

type of spiral-woven elutcn racing
which engages mora smoothly and

The current year will rank aa the
greatest tire yer since 1030, O. O.
Furnsa. Goodyear dealer hem at
Main and Riverside, predicted today.
Production for the year will be ap
proximately 63.0O0.0O0 units, the
largeat output In five years, with
ssles probsbly exceeding tbla figure
by a alight margin, he asld.
"The return of normal business
conditions, reflected In Increased
buying power generally, haa resulted
In a great upturn In .the automobile
Industry, with an even greater up
ward aurge In the tire world." air.
Furnaa explained. "Great numbens of
people have been able to buy new
cars, and even greater numbere, not
quite so affluent, have at least been
able to Replace worn tires on thetr
present vehicles with new ones. The
tire Industry haa felt the demand
from both sources.
"By the end of the year probably
33,000.000 tires will have been
ordered aa original equipment by aut.
omoblla and farm equipment man
ufacturers. Motor vehicles already In
operation require another 39.000,000
and 1.300,000 tlrea are being ex
ported." The number ot tlrea bolng bought
for vehlclea already In oporatlon Is
a healthy Indication, he pointed out.
Inasmuch aa every old tire retired
from active use Is one less potential
accident source on the country
hlghwaya.
"We here on the firing Una are
very conscious of this replacement
program being undertaken by car
owners, a program that la reflected
day after day In the Increased new
tire sales on our books. To us It Is
an Indication that car owners are
becoming Increasingly awnro of the
Importance of tlrea from the safety
standpoint. They realize that worn
tires are the onea that blow out, and
have no grip on the road for quick
stops: further they realise that the
continued uae of such tires is a bad
gamble when the lives of their fam
ilies are at stake."
