worker, who tossed an Improvised
bomb on a neighbor's porch; heard
himself sentenced to five years In

The young son of the neighbor,
Oeorge L. Belts, saw the' smoking
missile and hurled It Into a vacant
lot, where It exploded harmlessly.
Oerlcke pleaded temporary Insanity
and claimed he had been taunted,
but two alienists who examined the
defendsnt for the court said he knew
the difference between right and
wrong.

back up Its word. It Is reported un
officially that they have a "strike
treasury" of more than eaoo.ooo to be
used to feed and shelter strikers,
The strikers are encouraged addi
tionally, too, In the belief that the
federal government will not permit
the families of the maritime workers
to suffer.
"Labor put this administration In
power and returned It to power,"
Harry Bridges, president of the In
ternational longshoremen's associa
tion of the Pacific, said, "and the
administration will support us,"
Fear Public Wrath
The unions are confident thai they
have the power to enforce their. de
mands and admit only one fear. They
aro afraid that the publto will suf
fer from the stagnation of commerce
and will turn against the strikers.
The strategy committee, It was re
vealed, long before the strike was
called, decided that It there was a
strike, the "pressure" would be "put
on gradually."
The unions are confident, too, thai
they can "put on the pressure." By
thla moans they mean to tie up raw
materials and refuse to handle finish
ed products and force Idleness upon
the Paclflo coast and the nation.
The strike already has cost the Pa
clflo coast an estimated $170,000,000.
Labor and Industry say the toil la
7,000,000 a day and, as factory after
factory depletes Its raw material, the
dally cost Is mounting at a rapidly
accelerating pace.
Two hundred and sixteen vessel
are Idle in Paclflo coast ports.
Unions threatened today to "clamp
the ltd tighter" on the ports by ty
ing up foreign vessels as well as those
flying the American flog.

These arcbeologlcal finds, which
date back to the Iron and bronze ages
were discovered In a hitherto un
known mound which a forest ranger
stumbled upon In the Anzellng turest.

reached a wide cinder bed and under
this found the first tomb. Inside be
found two black vases, one fitted
into the other, a sword attached to
two copper rlnga, which were formerly
slipped on the belt ot the warrior,
and one long spear.
Further excavations In the forest
ot Oharlevllle-eou-Bols revealed a
more ancient tomb, which Delort
claims goes back farther to the
bronse age. - This tomb contained
beautifully engraved pins, almor-t 18
inches In length, bracelets, collars.

West Coast Lumbermen's association
said today 10,900 persons employed
In the lumber industry In Washing
ton and Oregon have been forced
out of work because of the maritime
strike and that 8.000 others were
working short weeks.
Thlrty-nlne mills have been closed
completely, and many othera have
operated two days a week, the asso
ciation reported.
Production In the 0J down and
operating mills in Washington and
Oregon dropped from llt.03D.C53 to
M.883J13 board feet during the first
two weeks of the strike, a 3B.3 per
cent decline. Shipments fell 43 1 per
cent and orders sank 87,0 percent.
