he said, adding that county road of

extensive oiling program as son as
possible and before the roads further
depreciate to the point where they
would have to be rebuilt. Th? sug

Weeds Discussed.
The only other phase of the budget
that came up for public discussion
was the explanation of the need of
weed control, expressed by Henry
Conger on behalf of the Grange. Mr.
Conger said the star thistle, chicory
and white-top were making Inroads
upon county grain and alfalfa crops
and unless nipped tn the bud would
cause severe monetary Joss to farm-

but he testified that white-top was
a far more formidable opponent.
Judge. Day explained that white
top was a definite menace, citing sev
eral cases In Klamath county where
the pestilent weed has made such
damaging Inroads that the county has
take nover several valuable plots In
fested by the weed, put chemicals
over the entire surface, and retired
the land from production for from
six to eight years In an effort to kill
the weed and bring the land back to
tillable condition. He warned that
an invasion of Jackson county by
white-top would be a real hazard to
agriculture here. The budget calls
for a $3,000 fund for weed control.
Motion that the budget be accept
ed as read was made by A. C. Hub
bard, and passed unanimously.
Besides Chairman Dunn and mem
bers of the county court, the budget
committee Is composed of George T.

BY SNAKE
PIERRE. S. D. (UP) A M. Jack
ley, snake expert, aays that hunting
rattlers Is as simple as the ABC's "If
you know your business."
The veteran uses a leather noose
on the end of a stout stick to pick
up snakes and put them in a sack
for safekeeping.
Precautions?
"Just watch your step," Jackley
said, "and don't take too much frtock
In the wild theories about rattlers.
Most of these are utterly groundless.
"For Instance, the. myth about a
horsehair rope around a tent oelng
protection against rattlers la foolish.
Hundreds of rattlesnakes have been
photographed crossing ropes."
Asked about the Interbreeding of
attlers and bull snakes the weather-
beaten professional snake hunter ex
plains: "Rattlesnakes are born and bull
snakes are hatched, so interbreeding
is a biological impossibility."
And the much heralded feud be- J
tween the rattler and the bull snake
amounts to nothing, Jackley said. It
If true that they sometimes battle
to death, he admitted, but this Is the
exception rather than the rule.
