and build general health, Hollywood stars are eating them more than

recently received glowing notices for her work in "Bulldog Edition,"
declares that eggs are an essential part of her dally diet because of their

old problem of how to maks cut
flowers last the longest posslblo time
Is being solved In the research lab
oratories of the Hawaiian ' Sugar
Planters' association here.
The new method just developed
consists of adding a few drops of
sulphurous acid to the water In
which the flowers are kept. It will
prolong the freshness of some large
stemmed varieties up to four and
lire days, teats disclosed.
Results aro declared to exceed
greatly those obtained by the use of
warm water and aspirin.
The formula as concocted by the
research laboratory provides for two
ordinary slued eye-droppers full of
tho sold to each pint of water for
, large flowers like hydrangeas, chrys
anthemums, lilies and gladlolas, or
one eye dropper full to the pint for
mall blooms having tender, delicate
eutrta. The cost Is about one-half a
cent to a pint of water.
Flower -lovers, however, are urged
to be oaroful to get sulphurous acid
and not sulphuric acid, aa the latter
Is deadly to plants.
The laboratory experiment have
demonstrated that the more mark
ed eftects are obtained with large
atemmed plants, presumably because
they have a larger amount of nat
ural reserve vitality on which the
formula can react than In the case
of atnaller flowers.
Hydrangeas were kept four to five
days longer with the solution than
with ordinary water. Flowers bloom
ing for only one day In the garden
were not benefitted by the solution,
but blooms which stay on growing
plants a lorwer time, usually fading
quickly when cut, were prolonged
successfully.
Chief credit for the discovery goes
to Dr. U. K. Das of Hawaiian Sugar
Planters' association chemists. Ho
found that a six percent solution of
sulphurous acid proved the Ideal mix
ture to koop down bacterial action
which usually causes flowers to die.

be used aa tho solution harms silver
or other metals.
The acid glvee the flowers a great
thirst, causing them to consume five
times moro water.
Dr. Das developed the solution In
attempting to find a method of
keeping alive sugar cane tassels dur
ing the "breeding1 period. He found
the experiment worked not only with
cane but garden flowers aa well.

horses and guide a stampede Into
the desired direction.
While aviation la used for dusting
crops and for sowing seeds over vast
expanses of land, still one more use
la to be mado of It. and for which
planes of tho necessary sire are be
ing constructed in southern Cali

capacity for carrying 3,000 tons of
fertillrer. It will be able to do In an
hour or two the work of fertilizing

the use of horses and wagons or even
tractors.

CREMONA, Italy. (UP) The sec
ond centenary of the death of An
tonio Stradivari, falling due In 1937,
will b commemorated hero with tho
erection of a monument in honor
of the Immortal maker of string In
strument, particularly violins, which
bear bis name and are now worth
fabulous sums.
The commemoration will be ac
companied by other kindred mani
festations. , . ..
The monument will rise by Initi
ative of the citizens of Cremona.
Stradivari's birthplace. The trlgtnal
plan, dating back as far as 1014 and
then abandoned because of vlciwl-
tudes, was to erect the memorial In
occasion of the second centenary of
Stradivari's birthday If latter's date
had been established with exactness
within a reasonable time. But"stnc4
biographers' researches In the city's
archives and records to this effect
had proved fruitless, It was decided
to honor him In connection with the
centenary of his death.
Another manifestation . which will
take place with the major one, will
consist of an exhibition of string In
struments of the 16th and 17th cen
turies, manufactured, besides Stradi
vari, by none less famous makers lke
Amatt and Ouarneri, the former
Stradivari's master.
Museums, private collectors, violin
players In possession of stradlvarls
all over the world, and the city of
Cremona, will contribute exhibits for
this show.
A fair of modern stringed instru
ments by Italian manufacturers will
be held simultaneously with the ex
hibition. It is planned to make the
fair annual thereafter, so that Cre
mona again will become the empo
rium of this production as It was In
the past,
A third manifestation will consist
of a series -of open air concerts, In
which compositions of the 17th cen
tury will be played. Violins, violas,
'cellos and contrabasses by old mas
ters, which will form the exhibits of
the exposition, will be played by cele
brated artists. A number of these,
both from Europe and the United
States, have already announced their
Intention of playing In these con
certs, offering their, fees to the fund
for the erection of a monument to
Claud io Monteverdi, another demon
ese. This monument will honor the
creater of the modern melodrama,
and consequently of the early orches
tras, in which string Instruments had
a leading part.

(AP) Arthur Rose Smiley, attorney
who formerly practiced in Portland,
Ore., and New York, died here yester
day of heart disease. Smiley, M,
specialized in petroleum litigation.
