raisin Industry of central California
was founded because Qenoral John
Bldwell, a wine-maker, turned pro
hlbltlonlatl Born In Ohatauqua county, New
York August S, 1610, Bldwell went
to Missouri In 1630, and from thore
lmlgrated to California with the first
overland party, arriving In the land
of El Dorado, 1841.
Here he soon rose to wealth on
the prooeede of rich gold cla'm to
which he won title, located on
Feather river. When tho mine was
exhausted, Bldwell turned to ranch
ing, purchased a 34,000 acre ranch
esat of Sacramento end proceeded to
raise grapes for the Osl fornia wine
Industry. Branching out .into the
actual wlne-maklng buslntea Bldwell
became one of the moat prominent
vintners in the state.
Elected a dilcsnte to the California
constltutloAaA convention in 1810,
Bldwell assisted In framing the doc
ument and In the same year became
a member of the stato's first legis
lature. - Established as a political
power, he Was elected a United Statej
representative and -was a candidate
for governor of Cal'fornla In 1876
In 1876 Bldwell affiliated himself
with the Prohibition party, uproot
ed all his wine besrlng grapevines,
and-planted rala'n varletlea In theli
stead. Nominated for the presidency
of the United States by th Prohi
bition party in 1893, the ex-wlne
maker received the largest presiden
tial vote ever polled by the party.
