Hollywood Completely Out
done in Eccentricity When
Andre Kostelanetz That
Way About Lily Pons
By Henry Sutherland.
United Press Hollywood Correspond
ent. HOLLYWOOD. Not. 18.-(UP) The
transcontinental courtship of Andre
Kostelanetz, muslo master sweetie of
Lily Pons, 1 over, and If be never
cores another triumph the maetro
can etlll count himself a success.
During the two months he wooed
La Pons with airplanes, pianos and
long-distance telephone from New
York, Kostelanetz won the reputa
tion of being nuttier than a fruit
cake, even in Hollywood.
To be regarded as a maniac else
where may not be flattering, but
when a man la branded a sorowboll
by a city full of the moat accomp
lished screwballs In the world, he's
got something.
Starts Air Commuting.
Short, plumplsh Kostelanetz, with
his plnce nest glasses and washed out
blond aonlp look raked over his bald
spott showed first signs of superior
eccentricity when La Pons reported
on the RKO lot early last September
for her annual movie.
Hold In Now York by his musical
chores, Kostelanetz Immediately be
gan alr-commutlng to Hollywood
each week-end. That doesn't seem
so odd until you consider the rest
of his schedule.
His broadcasts occur Tuesday and
Friday nights. Air 'travel occupied
more than 90 houre each week, and
his time In Hollywood was devoted
exclusively to Pons. Musical broad
oasts take time to' prepare, however,
so Kostelanetz rehearsed mentally
and sub-vocally wherever he happen
ed to be mumbling like a human
cat lope.
To complicate matters further.
Pons sent him strops nf her dally
rushes by airmail every 34 hour, and
on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thurs
day nights fcpent at least halt an
hour discussing them by long dis
tance telephone.
Buys Airplane Piano.
Kostelanetz didn't achieve real em
inence however, until he conceived
the piano plan. He had a special
"airplane piano" made for Pons
shipped 4t to Hollywood by plane
and followed soon after to explain the
works.
Idea Is that hereafter they'll be
able to rehearse while flying, mixing
arias and "ulpa" as the piano dip
and rises.
Pons is returning to New York thla
woek, and probably won't see Holly
wood again until next September.
Incidentally, she vows they aren't
married yot. and that they wont wed
on the coast, aa has been suspected.
