TOLEDO. (CP) When Charles
Roth comes home In the afternoon
and takes off a uniform and dona a
dinner coat lie la merely changing
from Lieut. Charles Roth of the To
ledo polios departmet to Conductor
Charlea Roth of the Toledo Civic
Symphony orchestra.
For tho lsst IS years, Both, 40 and
Teutonic, haa been a true "doubler
In braes."
For 38 years he haa been a police
man; for 13 of them conductor of
the symphony orchestra he organized
himself.
No less a composer than a director,
ha has Indited 70 musical numbers,
many scored for full symphony. And
he's a champion platol ahot.
It all started with "music," at 8.
At that age, only three years after ho
had begun school, be began tooting
a trombone.
Us started lessons, liked them and
no one had to tell him to practloe.
Crack Shot As Boy
As a boy, playmatea found Charley
was a orack shot with most any
weapon. So polios work came to fas-
otnte him as well as muslo. So he
mixed the two.
With little outside assistance. Roth
formed the Toledo Symphony In 2923.
In only eight months, It was able to
present Its first concert.
It grew steadily. Now thehe are 80
regular members, 80 extras. All are
union members and either teachers
or professional soloists.
In 192S, the orohestra was Incor
porated, with Solon T. Kioto, then
mayor and also president of the To
ledo Federation of Musicians, as
president.
Just now, In addition to his first

colleges and hospitals.
It Isn't every musician who la cool
nerved enough to be a pistol msrks
man. But In 1037 Roth fired his
way to the United States Individual
place revolver championship at the
national rifle matches at Camp Perry,
Ohio.
Also credited with breaking sev
eral world records In unofficial com
petition, he Is a qualified Instructor

Organised Safely Council
When a patrolman, Roth waa se
lected to lecture on safety at the
University of Toledo, In public snd
parochial schools in the schools, he
organised a safoty council, then
helpol In designing the national safe
y emblem.
Aa a policeman, Roth started
pounding a beat." Then he went
so the traffic division, later to tho
racord bureau, finally waa made a
detective. As a sergeant, he headed
the first radio patrol squad organ
ised here, Toledo's new oity man
ager, John N. Eddy, made him a lieu
tenant. Roth has a serious, somewhat stern
faoe. His build Is medium, snd, like
most good shots, his eyes are clear.
As a musician, hla preferences run
to Beethoven and Tschalkovslty; he
would rather conduct classics, but
believes futurlstlo and modernistic
music has a place In today'a pro
gram, i
Roth has two mustc-taiented daughters.

PUIS STRAIN ON
'LOMATIC TIE
SYDNEY (UP) By hastily chang
ing tho name of a polar beer In the
local zoological gardens from "Kosci
usko" to "Polar", zoo officials are
convinced they have averted an Inter
national Incident.
The too, which Is operated by the
Taronga. Park Trust, had decided, to
call the polar bear, "Kosciusko," be
cause there seemed to be some affin
ity between the snow-capped moun
tains In Mew South Wales and the Icy
regions which are the natural Daunts
of the polar bear.
The name - appeared innocent
enough and the bear appeared quite
hsppy.
Unfortunately, a copy of "Walk-
About" published by the Australian
National Travel association, contain
lng a photograph of the bear with his
baptismal name fell Into the bands of
the historic Polish family, Boleulaw
Slrzeleckl, chairman of the fltrze
Ifckl family committee, who Immedi
ately sent the following ultimatum
to the editor of "Walkabout";
"It Is really unbelievable that
civilized Australian magazine could
use great foreign heroes names for
their zoological exhibits. I would
highly appreciate your apology be
fore I would be compelled to file my
protest to the department of state
and the Polish embassy In Washing
ton. For your Information, the Gen
eral Kosciusko was a great Polish
patriot, and It is very unethical to
use hts name In such a manner."
To prevent a possible international
Incident the "Walkabout" appealed
Immediately to the Taronga Park
Trust, the latter to the Australian
government and authorization waa
granted to change the bear's birth
certificate from "Kosciusko" to
Polar."
